location

Trizay is about 14 meters above sea level. d. In the 19th century the place recorded a steady population increase from 270 in 1800 to over 800 in 1896. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decrease to 630 inhabitants in 1954, but because of the proximity to the city of Rochefort and the comparative low rents and land prices, the population has grown steadily over the past few decades.

economy

For centuries, agriculture for the self-sufficiency of the population played the largest role in the economic life of the community. But wine has been grown in the area since Roman times, which has been distilled since early modern times and exported to northern Europe (especially to England ). Trizay belongs to the Bois ordinaires et communs of the Cognac wine-growing region , but most of the grapes are processed into wine and Pineau des Charentes because of sales problems with Cognac brandies . Many farmers have returned to 'normal' agriculture.

history

In the area of the municipality there is a ruin of a large stone grave ( dolmen ), the capstones of which, however, have broken into several parts; several bronze axes were also found. In the 11th century, one of the landlords ( seignerurs ) of Tonnay , to whose territory Trizay belonged at that time, donated property to the Abbey of La Chaise-Dieu and probably also a sum of money with the condition that a priory be built there - this was the impetus for the establishment the priory church Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste and the adjoining cloister building , which later held the rank of an independent abbey and ultimately formed the core for the emergence and development of the place Trizay. During the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598), the - meanwhile largely independent - monastery was partially destroyed, but then rebuilt in a makeshift manner in order to be abandoned before the beginning of the French Revolution . In 1840, the residents of Trizay decided to leave the old town center and to re-establish the town at its current location - a chapel was built, which gave way to today's parish church in 1895.

  • Of the Romanesque church of the priory or the later abbey of Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste from the late 11th or early 12th century, about one kilometer west of the town, only parts of the choir and both remain - unusual for the architecture the Saintonge - sloping apses . The chapter house from the 13th century is more interesting , the presence of which indicates a high degree of independence from the mother monastery in La Chaise-Dieu, about 300 kilometers away (as the crow flies). Its late Romanesque facade is extremely richly decorated (multiple columns, five open and jagged arches, leaf capitals); the unadorned interior of the room - apart from the ribbed vault resting on columns and wall brackets - exudes a concentrated harmony. The dormitory and refectory have also been preserved, but are now often used for exhibitions. The entire complex has been recognized as a monument historique since 1920 .
Notre-Dame de Monthérault
  • The church ruin Notre-Dame de Monthérault , located in a formerly independent suburb of Monthérault , is one of the oldest churches in Saintonge - according to a local legend, its foundation goes back to Charlemagne , who came here in 777 as thanks for the victory in the battle of Montierneuf is said to have donated a church. Be that as it may - the parts that are visible today belong to the 10th and 11th centuries ( quarry stone masonry ), partly also to the 12th century ( stone masonry ) . A tower that was still in existence for a long time collapsed during a storm ( Hurricane Lothar ) in 1999 and caused further damage. The church ruin was recognized as a monument historique in 1996 .
  • The Château Belenfant , covered with dark slate , was built in 1887 by a wealthy merchant from the community.
  • In the Dolmen de Buffetizon were found remains of human and animal teeth, but - as well as several pottery shards - are from a later time.
