Saint-Césaire is a place and a western French community with 875 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saintes and the canton of Chaniers (until 2015: canton of Burie ). The inhabitants are called Acériens .
The community became internationally known in professional circles due to a largely complete Neanderthal skeleton, known as Saint-Césaire I , which was discovered in 1979 .

Saint-Césaire is located in the Saintonge about nine kilometers east of Saintes . Saint-Césaire is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Écoyeux in the north, Brizambourg in the north and northeast, Saint-Bris-des-Bois in the east and northeast, Saint-Sulpice-de-Cognac in the east, Chérac in the southeast, and Saint-Sauvant in the south South-west, Chaniers in the west and south-west, La Chapelle-des-Pots in the west and Vénérand in the north-west.
