Chérac is a place and a western French municipality with 1104 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saintes and the canton of Chaniers (until 2015: canton of Burie ). The inhabitants are called Chéracais .

Chérac is located in the Saintonge about 15 kilometers east-southeast of Saintes . The Charente river limits the municipality to the south. Chérac is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Sulpice-de-Cognac in the north, Louzac-Saint-André in the east and northeast, Saint-Laurent-de-Cognac in the east and southeast, Salignac-sur-Charente in the south and southeast, Brives- sur-Charente in the south, Montils and Rouffiac in the south-west, Dompierre-sur-Charente in the west and Saint-Sauvant and Saint-Césaire in the north-west. The National Route 141 runs through the municipality .
