Romegoux is a western commune with 603 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Romegoux is about 20 meters above sea level. d. M. in the historic cultural landscape of the Saintonge about 24 kilometers (driving distance) northwest of Saintes or 20 kilometers southeast of Rochefort .

In the 19th century the place always had between 600 and 760 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decline, which has been stopped in Romegoux in recent decades due to the proximity to the large cities of Saintes and Rochefort and the comparatively low rents and land prices.

economy

For centuries, agriculture for the self-sufficiency of the population played the largest role in the economic life of the community. But wine has been grown in the area since Roman times, which has been distilled since early modern times and exported to northern Europe (especially to England ). Romegoux belongs to the Bois ordinaires et communs of the Cognac wine-growing region , but most of the grapes are processed into wine and Pineau des Charentes due to sales problems with Cognac brandies .

history

Little information is available about the history of the place. Two sites from Gallo-Roman times (including one under the church) suggest a long period of settlement.

  • Although the parish church of Saint-Pierre looks blocky and defensive in its appearance, many details (portal, windows, gargoyles , rib vaults ) point to a construction period in the late Gothic period (15th / 16th century). A previous Romanesque building was probably there, but no remains can be identified. The vestibule of the west portal forms - without interposed capitals - a basket arch , which develops into keel arches in the two outer and upper lines . The single nave interior is covered by a ribbed vault; some of the ribs in the crossing area seem to grow out of the mighty pillars - a typical late Gothic construction. The tracery of the three-lane apse window shows flamboyant motifs ( fish bubbles ). Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1931 .
  • Immediately next to the church is a sarcophagus with a figural cover plate ( gisant ).
  • To the east of the village there are two water mills ( Moulin du Champ and Moulin de Besson ).
  • In the vicinity of the place there are several aboveground and underground limestone quarries ( carrières ); The stones, which were easy to work with and yet hard, were exported by ship ( gabares ) all over the world between the 16th and 19th centuries .
