Reinhold Kluthe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinhold Kluthe (born July 8, 1928 in Dillingen / Saar ; † July 16, 2007 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German internist , nephrologist and pioneer of modern nutritional medicine .

Life

After studying medicine, he first worked at the Hygiene Institute at the University of Freiburg , and later at the Medical University Polyclinic in Freiburg with Professor Hans Joachim Sarre , one of the leading German nephrologists at the time.

Kluthe completed research stays in Bern and Basel . In 1964 he qualified as a professor for internal medicine on the subject of “ Pathogenesis and Clinic of Protein Metabolism in Nephrotic Syndrome ”. From 1965 to 1991 he worked at the Medical Polyclinic of the University of Freiburg, first as a senior physician, then as acting director. In 1970 he received the professorship for internal medicine. In 1977 he took over the management of the newly established Nutritional Medicine and Dietetics Section and founded the very first nutrition team in Germany the following year .

In 1991 Kluthe took early retirement in order to be able to devote himself more intensively to his work for the German Academy for Nutritional Medicine, which he founded. In 2004 he founded the Kluthe Foundation together with his son.

On July 16, 2007, Reinhold Kluthe died after a long illness at the age of 79.

Services

Kluthe was one of the first to recognize the adverse effects of metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and obesity on the kidney . He investigated the effects of a salt restriction on arterial hypertension early on and helped to coined the term “salt-sensitive patient”.

In the 1960s, together with Herbert Quirin, he developed the low-protein potato-egg diet for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease . With this strict diet it was possible in the pre-dialysis period to keep the patients alive until a suitable organ for kidney transplantation was available.

Kluthe built up several nutritional medicine societies, including the "German Working Group for Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics" (DAKED), a forerunner of the later German Society for Nutritional Medicine (DGEM) . In 1978, under his leadership, DAKED published the first "rationalization scheme" aimed at providing scientific evidence and simplifying the types of food offered in clinics . In 1983 Kluthe co-founded the German Academy for Nutritional Medicine (DAEM) with some colleagues, of which he was President until 2004, then as Honorary President. The curricular medical training for nutritional medicine developed by the DAEM served as the basis for the draft of the nutritional medicine curriculum of the German Medical Association in 1995 , which Kluthe significantly shaped. He was also a co-founder in 1999 and subsequently a long-standing member of the executive committee of the Federal Association of German Nutritionists (BDEM).

Kluthe was the founding editor of the four journals "Clinical Nephrology", "Kidney and Hypertension Diseases", "Current Nutritional Medicine" and "Der Ernovicmediziner".

He was also committed to maintaining high quality standards in nutritional medicine by first obtaining certification in 1997 for clinics (as a "teaching clinic for nutritional medicine of the German Academy for Nutritional Medicine"), then for medical practices focused on nutritional medicine (as a "focus practice in nutritional medicine, Federal Association of German Nutritionists" ) co-developed.

Fonts

Kluthe published more than 350 publications on metabolic problems and the clinical picture of kidney and hypertension diseases as well as nutrition-dependent diseases, as well as several textbooks and non-fiction books , including, together with Herbert Quirin, the diet book for kidney patients: A guide for doctors, dieticians and kidney patients (Thieme, 1968 - 144 pages).

He worked on the nutrition reports of 1984 and 1988 on the subjects of "Critical evaluation of diets propagated forms of nutrition" and " Dietary care in the hospital".
