Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult is a French commune with 1,807 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

geography

It is located around 23 kilometers northwest of Saintes and 15 kilometers south of Rochefort , on the Arnoult river , which continues from here, channeled under the name Canal de Pont-l'Abbé .

In ancient times the sea reached as far as Pontum Labium (Latin literally: sea lip), as the place was called at that time.
In the 12th century, a priory was founded in Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult as a daughter priory of the Abbaye aux Dames , from nearby Saintes, which was under the care of the mother abbey and was richly endowed with lucrative lands. The priory was among those of Margaret of Navarre , sister of the French king Francis I . The priories claimed all feudal rights to taxes (taxes, fees, tithes), and in return they took care of administration and defense.

During the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the monastery was set on fire. It was then restored and redesigned in the 17th century.

During the French Revolution , the priory was sold as a national good for demolition by the population.

In 1887 the church was classified as a monument historique .
