location

In the 19th century the place always had between 1,300 and 1,550 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decline, which has been stopped in recent decades due to the proximity to the large cities of Saintes and Rochefort and the comparatively low rents and land prices in Port-d'Envaux.

economy

For centuries, agriculture for the self-sufficiency of the population played the largest role in the economic life of the community. However, wine has also been grown in the area since Roman times, which has been distilled since the early modern era and exported to Northern Europe (especially England ). Port-d'Envaux is one of the Bois ordinaires et communs of the Cognac wine-growing region , but most of the grapes are processed into wine and Pineau des Charentes because of the sales problems with Cognac brandies . Many winegrowers have gone back to "normal" farming. Large parts of the municipal area are forested and are used for forestry. Until the completion of a railway line in 1902, the town's river port was an important transshipment point for wines and brandies made from cognac, for salt or for limestone from the region, which were shipped to England in barges ( gabares ). The number of commercial suppliers (ship carpenters, canvas and rope makers, etc.) was correspondingly large.

history

Little information is available on the history of the place. The facts that the place has a Romanesque church and a medieval prevogtei, however, suggest a long settlement period, which probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman times.

  • The Romanesque-Gothic parish church of Saint-Saturnin-de-Séchaud largely dates from the 12th century; it was partially rebuilt and supplemented in the 15th and 19th centuries. The outer walls of the nave , the middle floor of the crossing tower and the choir area including the apse date from the original construction period . It is possible that the Romanesque barrel vault was damaged due to the width of the building - in any case, the church received a narthex in the 15th century ; In addition, the nave was raised (whereby the console frieze was preserved below the former eaves ), the windows of the nave were replaced and inside the church - with the exception of the crossing - Gothic rib vaults were drawn in. Most of the furnishings date from the 19th century.
  • The late medieval building complex of the old Prevogtei, the seat of the deputy royal judge and governor, is about 50 meters behind the choir of the church. The site was formerly surrounded by a wall, parts of which are still preserved. In the courtyard stands to this very day a dovecote ( pigeonnier ), which at that time only noble people had reserved.
  • On the edge of the two and a half hectare Pré Valade green area there are two uncovered washing areas from the 19th century.
  • About a kilometer north-west of the village - on the site of an older building, of which the pigeon house from 1620 has been preserved - is the Château de Panloy , a building from the time of Louis XV. Its construction time was only two years (1770–1772); The client was the Baron de Saint-Dizant . At the end of the 19th century, the owner at the time decided to raise the mansard roof , which significantly increased the representative overall impression. Major parts of the castle have been recognized as a monument historique since 1983 . The building is now partially used as a hotel; Parts can be viewed on guided tours.
