In the 19th century the number of inhabitants was consistently around 400; after that, the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture caused a steady decline. Due to the relative proximity to the cities of Saintes and Pons and the comparatively low rental and property prices, the population of Thaims has increased slightly again in recent years.
economy
Agriculture and viticulture have determined the economic life of the place for centuries, which also functioned as a trade, craft and service center for the small villages and farmsteads in the surrounding area. The soils of the municipality belong to the cultivation area of the Fins Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but cereals (wheat, maize) are also grown on many arable land. Since the 1980s, tourism (rental of holiday apartments) has been added as a source of income.
history
As the discovery of the hypocaust on a Gallo-Roman manor ( villa rustica ) shows, the area has been settled for a long time. In the Middle Ages the place was on a branch line of the Jacobsweg . The place was probably equipped with a Romanesque church as early as the end of the 11th century ; whether this was affected in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) is not known.

The parish church of Saint-Pierre was built at the end of the 11th century and changes were made into the 13th century. During excavation work, hypocausts were discovered in the area under the crossing, so it must be assumed that the church was built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman manor ( villa rustica ). Compared to the churches of the neighboring parishes, the west facade is extremely simple, so that an early construction time in the late 11th century is assumed. Only the richly structured octagonal bell storey of the crossing tower and the choir area with its semicircular closed apse - also with their technically perfect stone work compared to the lower part of the crossing tower - indicate a later construction period. The single nave interior is vaulted with a pointed barrel; the crossing, however, has a rib vault . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1916 .
