The tanker of type Leuna had a production run of the Admiralty Shipyard in Leningrad for the VEB German Seereederei Rostock (DSR).

history

The demand for fuel in the GDR economy increased in the second half of the 1950s. Therefore, the GDR ordered five motor tankers in the USSR in 1957 . The type ship Leuna-I , after which the series is also referred to as the type Leuna-I , was put into service on September 30, 1958. With the Schwedt , the last of the five tankers was put into service on May 20, 1962.

To import oil, the tankers initially called at the ports of Odessa , Batumi , Tuapse and Novorossiysk in the Black Sea . Other oil ports were the Albanian port of Vlora and the Latvian port of Ventspils . Later ports in the Persian Gulf and Venezuela were also called.

Because of their A 1 ice class , the ships were also used to supply the fishing and processing vessels of the Rostock Fish Combine in the North Sea . Before Warnemünde they were used as light ships for fully loaded large tankers lying in the roadstead , which could call at the Rostock oil port after being lightened . They also transported oil from the tank farm in Gothenburg , which had been rented by the GDR, to Rostock .

The Leuna-II was converted into an ore freighter in 1968 and then operated as Dessau until 1986 . The Böhlen sank in 1976 after grounding off the coast of Brittany , killing 26 people. The Leuna-I was at her decommissioning in 1981 by the DSR the senior tanker in the series.

technology

The tankers were propelled by two non-compressor, reversible two-stroke marine diesel engines of the Russki-Diesel type, which acted on a propeller via a common gear. The ships thus achieved a service speed of 12 knots.
