Gerd Peters

Gerd Peters (born January 1934 in Berlin-Neukölln ) is a German naval officer , journalist and author. In the 1970s and 1980s he was known as the "television captain" on television in the GDR .

Life

Gerd Peters grew up in Berlin. His parents were keen sailors. During the Second World War he moved with them to Silesia as the factory where his father worked was relocated there. Gerd Peters experienced the end of the war in Thuringia. Back in Berlin he learned the trade of a steel ship builder after finishing school. After a brief teaching position, he completed training as a naval officer from 1954 to 1958 and served until 1960 as the commander of a mine clearing boat for the naval forces of the GDR with the rank of chief master . From 1960 to 1962 he was an officer on the sailing training ship Wilhelm Pieck . In 1963 he began training as a nautical officer and worked as such on the FDGB holiday ship Völkerfreundschaft and other ships of the German shipping company (DSR). In 1969 Gerd Peters was appointed captain and led the Type IV ships Dresden and Berlin . From 1970 he was in various positions in the management of the DSR and the combine shipping and port management. Between 1972 and 1981 he also drove as a captain on the international friendship as the holiday representative of the regular captain.

From 1972 Gerd Peters was a frequent guest on the radio show “Stammtisch der Fahrenseople” on Rostock's radio station on the GDR radio . On GDR television he moderated the programs “Music & Snacks in front of the harbor” and “Logbook of the Seafaring” from the Rostock Baltic studio . Together with Eva Stein, he wrote the script for the 1977 episode “Pilot on board” of the television series Zur See , which he also supported as a consultant and in which he can be seen in a supporting role as an average commissioner in episode 8 (The Negotiation) .

In 1988 he left the DSR at his own request to concentrate on his journalistic activities. Since 1989 he has worked as a freelance journalist and book author.

Gerd Peters has been an enthusiastic sailor since childhood and was a member of various sailing clubs in Berlin and on the Baltic Sea.
