The tasks of the shipping industry in the GDR were carried out by VEB Seeverkehr und Hafenwirtschaft - Deutfracht / Seereederei from January 1, 1974. The combine was directly subordinate to the Minister of Transport and was supposed to work according to economic accounting. The operations VEB Deutfracht / Seereederei Rostock , abbreviated DSR , belonged to the combine , as the parent company, as seaports of the GDR the VEB Seehafen Rostock , the VEB Seehafen Wismar and the VEB Seehafen Stralsund. This also included the VEB Schiffsmaklerei, the dredging, hauling and salvage shipping company Rostock, abbreviated BBB and the VEB Schiffsversorgung Rostock. The Tallierungs mbH also belonged to the Combine, however, was subordinated to the General Director of the Combine directly in terms of performance. The combine emerged from the management of the previous maritime transport and port industry and its operations, which was active as an economic management body until the transformation on January 1, 1974. In terms of basic resources, the companies had berths, transport facilities, cranes, storage sheds and outdoor storage areas. They employed handling workers for the associated work. The combine shipping and port management provided its main and ancillary services for domestic and foreign clients against calculation of fixed tariff prices.

history

1946 to 1949

The then Binnenschifffahrt AG had to cease operations in 1947 because private companies in the former eastern zone were restricted in their activities. From August 11th to 12th, 1948, the shipping conference of the Soviet occupation zone took place in East Berlin with the focus on the state of the development of the seaports. On October 1, 1949, the German Shipping and Handling Company (DSU) was founded. The DSU received the sole affreightment right in the Soviet occupation zone. After the founding of the GDR in 1949, the German-Russian Transport AG (DERUTRA) was founded as a state-owned company for transport, storage and forwarding. The DERUTRA gradually began to take over all functions on the coast.

1949 to 1974

On August 17, 1950, the GDR Council of Ministers decided to build 18 merchant ships of 1,000 to 8,000 GRT. In 1952 the DSR was converted into the VEB Deutsche Seereederei, of which Karl Salomon was appointed head. In 1954 the first management building was moved into a former warehouse in Rostock's city harbor . In 1955 Wilhelm Knapp took over the management of the DSR from Karl Salomon and thus became the first director of the DSR until 1957.

In 1973 the GDR became a member of the Far Eastern Freight Conference . The different trade flag previously carried by the ships of the GDR was replaced by the state flag of the GDR on May 1, 1973 .

In 1974, VEB Deutsche Seereederei and VEB Deutfracht were merged in the combine shipping and port management . From that point on, DSR stood for VEB Deutfracht / Seereederei Rostock.

Since 1990

In May 1990 it was decided to convert the Kombinat Seeverkehr- und Hafenwirtschaft (KSH) into a corporation managed by the trust. On June 18, 1990, the company was converted into a corporation, of which the Treuhandanstalt became a partner . As a further measure, the non-shipping-typical areas were outsourced and by 1992 the workforce was reduced from 14,500 to 5,846.

The resulting Deutsche Seereederei has been working privately since June 3, 1993 after two Hamburg merchants took over DSR GmbH from the Treuhandanstalt.
