The foreman was the second highest sergeant rank of the rank group of non-commissioned officers of the People's Navy of the former NVA the GDR .

The rank of the sergeant major was equal to the rank of seafaring in the other NVA branches . In the bootsmännischen career of the foreman was a Chief Petty Officer conducted in the career of the mates as navigator. The next higher rank was the chief of staff , the lower rank was the master .

Introduced as a rank in the People's Police in 1961, the Obermeister ranked just behind the Staff Master . According to today's NATO rank codes , the Obermeister would be comparable to OR-7.

Specialty

The rank of Obermeister der Volksmarine is not to be confused with the rank Obermeister of the VP , who in the People's Police was the highest rank of the rank group of NCOs with Portepee and was equivalent to the Staff Sergeant of the NVA (OR-8).
