The bar top Master was the highest sergeant rank of the rank group of non-commissioned officers of the People's Navy of the former NVA the GDR .

The rank of the Sergeant in the other NVA armed forces was the same as the rank of seafarer . The next higher rank was the ensign (of the People's Navy) and until 1973 the Unterleutnant (of the People's Navy) . The lower rank was the Obermeister (the People's Navy) .

Introduced in 1961

Introduced into the People's Police Sea , from 1961 the Chief of Staff of the People's Navy ranked just behind the Unterleutnant (at sea) . With the introduction of the rank group of ensigns in 1973, the next higher rank was ensign (at sea). According to today's NATO rank codes , the Chief of Staff would be comparable to OR-8.
