NATO rank code

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NATO rank code , which is defined in Standardization Agreement 2116 ( STANAG ), serves to compare the ranks of the various armed forces of the 30 member states of NATO . It consists of a combination of letters and numbers.

Since there are differences in the designation of the ranks within the various national armies and their sub-armed forces, the NATO rank code serves to simplify the recognition of the ranks of soldiers from other countries. The NATO rank code is not to be confused with the salary groups , as these are only country-specific (for example: the German pay levels according to the federal salary order (BBesO) or the US pay levels ). In addition, not all ranks are necessarily identical, but can be identified as similar by the rank code.

Levels of the rank code

In this list, only the ranks of the respective land forces are given as examples, different ranks of air and naval forces are described in the linked articles for the individual ranks. In Germany there are various official designations for the lowest rank in different branches of arms such as "Rifle", "Jäger", "Grenadier" etc., for the sake of simplicity the lowest rank is given here with the unofficial collective name "Soldier".

The NATO rank code is divided into officer ( OF , English officer ) and "other" ranks ( OR , other (enlisted) ranks , so NCOs and men ); In five NATO countries there are also warrant officers ; these form a separate rank group between non-commissioned officers and officers and are listed separately.

Belgium has three official languages (French, Dutch and German), however, due to the low prevalence of German and the fact that only French and Dutch are spoken in the Belgian armed forces, only these terms are listed. Canada has two official languages (English and French), so there are equivalent multilingual rank designations in these two countries. For this reason, all language versions for these countries are listed in the following tables.

Use of the NATO rank code for non-NATO countries

In joint missions with the armed forces of non-NATO countries (e.g. in international peace missions), the NATO rank code is often used to compare ranks. Austria and Switzerland have made corresponding lists available on their armed forces' internet portals.
