The chief adjutant is a rank of the Swiss Army (abbr .: Hptadj ), which has existed since January 1, 2004.

This degree is held by professional non-commissioned officers who serve as management assistants for the school commanders, as well as senior non-commissioned officers in the militia who are assigned to the staff of a brigade.

Professional NCOs are on the one hand deployed as command assistants to the school commandant. The chief adjutant is the commandant's right-hand man. Among other things, he is the school's HR manager and confidant for employees in all categories. He is responsible for the further development and career planning of the staff employed at the school. On the other hand, Hptadj hold various other functions such as class teacher on courses for senior NCOs or class teachers at the professional NCO school of the army (BUSA).

Militia chief adjutants are deployed in the brigade staff in the basic command areas 1 (personnel), 2 (intelligence service), 4 (logistics) and 5 ( territorial service ). They perform their duties according to a differentiated specification.

On assignments abroad, he is referred to as a Master Warrant Officer (MWO). NATO rank code : OR-9.

The rank badge consists of two superimposed angles with a transverse bar underneath. In the center there is a Swiss cross (Ordonnanzkreuz) set in foliage and above it two more angles, one above the other.
