The rank of Oberstabsfeldwebel is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .

Authority to command and positions

In the German Armed Forces, the Oberstabsfeldwebel is a sergeant major , which, according to the Central Service Regulation (ZDv) A-1420/24 "Ranks and Rank Groups", belongs to the rank group of NCOs with portepee . Because they belong to the rank group of NCOs with portepee, Sergeants Sergeants can issue orders within the limits set there to soldiers of the rank groups of teams and NCOs without portepee on the basis of § 4 ("Superiors relationship based on rank") of the Superiors Ordinance.

Oberstabsfeldwebel usually perform their service in higher staffs and offices. In the troops they are deployed in prominent positions : In the combat troops they serve as company sergeants ("spit") of the staff and supply company , as S3 sergeants or as troop supply officers for the armed forces . They are also used as platoon leaders in the combat and command support force . Due to the position in the service, sergeant major can issue orders to all service or technical subordinate soldiers in the cases listed in the superior ordinance.

Appointment and remuneration

The decisive legal basis for the appointment as Oberstabsfeldwebel is governed by the Soldiers' Career Ordinance (SLV) and, in addition, the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. To rank Sergeant Major to professional soldiers and ordered reservists are appointed. A recruitment with the rank of Oberstabsfeldwebel is not planned. The rank can be achieved at the earliest 19 years after appointment as sergeant and six years after appointment as chief sergeant .

history

The rank of Oberstabsfeldwebel was newly introduced in 1955 when the Bundeswehr was founded. The Federal Ministry of Defense put the rank of Oberstabsfeldwebel (as well as staff officer , staff sergeant and senior staff officer ) on the extinction budget when the career of officers in the military service was introduced in 1969. New promotions were only possible again from the beginning of 1983. The top service level of the non-commissioned officers was therefore temporarily the sergeant major , who, in addition to grade A8, could now also reach grades A9 and A9 with official allowance . This regulation ceased to apply on January 1, 1983.

Equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks

The rank of Oberstabsfeldwebel only carry Army and Air Force uniforms . Navy uniform bearers of the same rank hold the rank of senior staff officer . In the armed forces of the NATO the Oberstabsfeldwebel is at all ranks with the NATO Code rank OR-9 equivalent.

In the sergeant's careers , the Oberstabsfeldwebel according to No. 127 f. ZDv 20/7 one rank above the lower-ranking staff sergeant or staff boatman (first rank designation for army and air force uniform wearers; second rank designation for naval uniform wearers). The Oberstabsfeldwebel is the highest rank of the rank group of NCOs with portepee and the top rank in the sergeant careers; Soldiers of sergeant careers will not be promoted in this career. There is therefore no higher rank than the Oberstabsfeldwebel in these careers. According to § 4 of the Superiors Ordinance, all officers whose lowest ranks are the lieutenant (for army and air force uniforms) and the sea ​​lieutenant (for naval uniforms) are superiors of the sergeant major within the limits defined there.

The armed forces rank should not be confused with the sergeant major , who was the highest sergeant rank in the navy of the German armed forces from 1939 to 1945.
