The Taranaki Harald was founded by William Collins and Garland William Woon . Garland William Woon was born in Tonga in 1831 and continued the tradition of his father William. The Taranaki Harald was the first newspaper published in the Taranaki region and also the last surviving newspaper of the early European settlers. The first edition of the newspaper appeared on August 4, 1852. In 1867, Henry Weston took over the newspaper, which he ran as sole owner until 1920. Several members of the Weston family were also associated with the newspaper. After several difficult economic situations in the early years, which were always overcome, economic problems in the 1970s and 1980s ultimately led to the business being closed in 1989.
