The rank of corporal is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .

Authority to command and positions

In the Federal Armed Forces, the corporal is a team rank , which according to the central service regulation (ZDv) A-1420/24 "Ranks and rank groups" belongs to the rank group of the teams . Because they belong to the rank group of the teams, corporal officers on the basis of § 4 ("Superiors relationship based on the rank") of the Superiors Ordinance cannot issue orders to anyone solely on the basis of their rank . Like all team ranks, corporal corporations cannot declare themselves to be superiors according to § 6 ("Superiors relationship based on their own declaration") of the Superiors Ordinance, even in emergencies .

Rod Corporal, for example, as a driver of armored vehicles , particularly trained infantryman (for example, sniper , MILAN - steering contactors or in specialized forces ), as . Vice wax-do in the security service or operator of weapon systems (. Eg as gunner armored vehicles ), as repairer also complex technical systems ( on-board weapons , radios , optical and electronic reconnaissance equipment , etc.), or used in staff departments . Experienced corporal corporations are sometimes auxiliary instructors or (then mostly only temporarily in accordance with Section 5 ("Superiors 'relationship based on special orders") of the Superiors' Ordinance ) group and squad leaders . On the basis of these and similar positions and areas of responsibility, Corporals can issue orders to all soldiers who are officially or professionally subordinate in the cases listed in the Supervisor Ordinance and within the limits specified there.

Appointment and remuneration

The relevant legal basis for the appointment as a corporal is the Soldier Career Ordinance (SLV) and in addition the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. Temporary soldiers and assigned reservists of the career paths of the teams can be appointed as lance corps . Soldiers can be appointed corporal 36 months after entering service in the Bundeswehr. The rank of corporal, like the ranks of corporal and corporal, does not have to be passed. Therefore private or corporal corporal can be promoted directly to corporal; Private, Lance-Corporal and Lance-Corporal can also be appointed directly as Lance- Corporal and consequently “skip” the rank of Lance-Colonel (and possibly the other ranks in between). As a rule, however, corporal officers previously served in the rank of corporal.

Time soldiers in rank Stabsgefreiter after the Bundesbesoldungsgesetz order (BBesO) with A 5 remunerated . Reservist service providers instead receive benefits under the Maintenance Assurance Act ( USG ).

history

By the order to change the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers of December 12, 1989 the rank of corporal was created as the new, highest rank for men.

Equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks

Army, air force and naval uniform bearers lead the rank of corporal. In the NATO armed forces, the Corporal is equivalent to all ranks with the NATO rank code OR-4. According to the NATO rank code, the rank of the German Armed Forces is comparable , for example, to the specialist in the armed forces of the United States .

In the career group of the crews, the private corporal is placed above the lower-ranking corporal and below the higher- ranking corporal.

French armed forces

In France, the corresponding rank is Caporal-chef de première classe (also Caporal-chef de 1 re classe ) and belongs to the rank group of the Militaires du rang (teams). It was only introduced in 1999 and only exists in the army . The Caporal-Chef de première classe stands below the Sergent and above the Caporal-Chef . Lower ranks address him as Caporal-Chef or even just as Chef .

National Peoples Army

In the National People's Army and the border troops of the GDR , Stabsgefreiter (OR-3) was the highest rank of the teams . The equivalent rank of the People's Navy was the staff sailor . The standing time before being promoted to the next higher rank was up to a year and was usually reserved for soldiers who served longer voluntarily. In the National People's Army, the rank of corporal until it was dissolved in 1990.

Badge of rank until 1945

The rank of corporal was introduced in the Reichswehr in 1927 . In the army of the Wehrmacht it was awarded until the end of the war in 1945, with one interruption from 1934 to 1942. In the Reichsmarine and Kriegsmarine it was in constant use until 1945. (See also: NS hierarchy ). The Luftwaffe of the German Wehrmacht introduced him in 1944 instead of the rank of corporal .

The corporal, like the other private ranks, was intended for members of the crews to whom the career of NCOs was closed. They were often given positions of trust such as fodder and quartermasters. In the last years of the war, corporal officers were often used as group leaders due to the lack of non-commissioned officers .

Remarks

  1. Left: Rank badge on the epaulette of the jacket of the service suit for army uniform wearers of the army anti-aircraft troops . Middle: Rank badge on the shoulder flap of the jacket of the service suit for Air Force uniform wearers. Right: sleeve badge on the shirt, white of a navy uniform wearer ( usage series 40s Marinetechnikdienst)
  2. Since the Soldiers' Careers Ordinance allows the change from private corporal to other careers , there are also soldiers of other careers who have the rank of private corporal.
  3. Active soldiers can in practice be appointed corporal after 36 months of service . For reservists the same applies that the transport can only take place 36 months after entering into a corresponding employment relationship. Reservists and active soldiers are treated on an equal footing insofar as reservists are appointed to this rank no earlier than for soldiers who “remained” in a different military service relationship. In this respect, reservists are treated as if they had served in the Bundeswehr without interruption. For reservists, however, the period of service is usually much shorter overall, since only a relatively few days of military service, for example in the form of military exercises, have to be performed before being appointed to a higher rank.
  4. In practice, "skipping" ranks is very rare. The prerequisite is that the other conditions of the Soldiers' Career Ordinance for the appointment to a higher rank are met, especially with regard to the length of service. As a rule, teams go through the ranks in the usual order of private , lance-corporal , lance-corporal , lance-corporal , lance-corporal .

  6. For reasons of space, shortened captions. What is meant are army uniforms , air force uniforms and naval uniforms . The hunter-green flat braid shown next to the slip-on loop for army uniforms indicates a soldier in the armored infantry troops , infantry or special forces . In addition to the slip-on loops for the field blouse in the five-color camouflage pattern shown here on the shoulder flaps, there are a number of other types of rank insignia, which are described in more detail in the article → "Rank insignia of the Bundeswehr" .
  7. In the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers , the sleeve badges are described for naval uniform wearers . For some types of suits for navy uniform wearers, however, according to central service regulation 37/10, diagonal stripes are provided on both epaulettes as for army and air force uniforms .
