Bundeswehr strands in different colors to differentiate between the different branches of arms

The color of arms in the features Bundeswehr membership of the soldiers or of an entire military unit to a branch of service . The distinction between the troop type is particularly well-known by means of colored collar tabs or braids on the epaulets of the army uniform wearers. The beret badges have a similar function . Based on the concept of the weapon color , similarly designed colored uniforms indicate membership of the Luftwaffe or generals . In the Navy, the concept of the type of service and thus also the color of the weapon is unknown; A similar function there, however, is taken by the series and career badges.

term

The color of the basic cloth of the collar tabs (apart from the color of the collar tabs for generals and officers in the general staff service ) is usually referred to as the weapon color . The ZDv 37/10 does not contain this term, but it is used in many official documents of the Bundeswehr and in relevant legal texts. In Germany, nationalized at the new uniforms Reichswehr in 1921 , the term of those parts of uniforms "Arms Color" for the color that you - in memory of the formerly common large-scale badge colors or complicated systems of equalization - which is now largely in muted camouflage held uniforms of different weapons classes differentiated ( See weapon colors of the Reichswehr ). Etymologically , the term “weapon color” is closely related to the term “weapon type” of earlier German armed forces. In the Bundeswehr, however, the term “ military class” has largely replaced the term “weapon class”; however, the term “weapon color” has survived.

The Luftwaffe knows no military branches and therefore no weapon color in the narrower sense; For Air Force uniform wearers, however, golden yellow takes on the role of a weapon color and is often referred to as such.

In the case of generals and officers in the general staff service, crimson or crimson is used instead of the weapon color of their armies to identify their prominent positions . For this reason, crimson and crimson are sometimes referred to as weapon colors, although they do not indicate membership of a military class.

use

Part of the uniform

The collar tabs and shoulder flap underlay for officers of the engineer force in the weapon color “black”

Weapon colors can only be found on the uniforms of army uniform wearers and, in a broader sense, on air force uniform wearers . Relevant wearing regulations are standardized in the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 37/10 “Suit regulations for soldiers in the Bundeswehr”.

Collar Tabs

Army and air force uniforms wear collar tabs on the collar corners of their service jackets and ski blouses . The color of the basic cloth of the collar tabs for wearers of army uniforms (except for generals and officers in the general staff service ) depends on the weapon color of the military type ; Air force uniform wearers always have golden yellow ground cloths (except for generals and officers in the general staff service); Generals and the officers in the General Staff Service have basic scarves in crimson or crimson .

Advances and documents of the epaulettes

The epaulets of the NCOs and men are set on the uniform and the ski blouse in the same color as their collar tabs. In the case of senior middlemen and officers, the shoulder flaps of the service jacket (not those of the ski blouse and not of the formal suit) are highlighted in the color of the collar tabs.

Flat strands

For army uniform wearers, the epaulets of field parkas, field jackets, field blouses, field shirts , sweaters and blousons usually have loops made of 0.4 cm wide bobbin lace (known as braid for short ) in the colors of the collar tabs, which are pushed onto the epaulets and on the sleeve insert seam. Usually the strands are only "awarded" after completing basic training , although according to ZDv 37/10 army uniform wearers have to wear strands regardless of the length of service. Generals can also wear straps in the color of their troop type on their combat uniform.

Advances on the collar

Air force uniform wearers of the rank group of the crews and NCOs without portepee have the collars of the service jackets in the same color as the collar tabs.

Headgear

In Luftwaffe uniforms, the ships of the NCOs and crews have a flap piping in the color of the basic cloth of their collar tabs. NCOs wearing peaked caps for air force uniforms have a piping on the lid in the color of their collar tabs. Contrary to the provisions of ZDv 37/10, the beret badge is partly backed with a cloth in the color of the weapon. This modification is found particularly often in berets of the armored and army reconnaissance troops and is often tolerated there.

Concealed parts of the uniform

Even when they are dressed , the inside of their service jackets and berets are often the same as the weapon - the ZDv 37/10 does not make any provisions on the (usually invisible) inner lining .

heraldry

Association badge Panzerregiment 200. Borders in the weapon color of the armored forces

The weapon color often appears in the tinging of the association badges and internal association badges. Examples are the boards of the association badges of most troop schools , which are executed in the color of weapons, or those of the (now disbanded) brigades of the army troop command .

Other uses

The flag ribbons of the Bundeswehr troop flags donated by the Federal President are in the weapon color. In diagrams and maps, tactical signs are often highlighted in the weapon color of the unit in order to facilitate orientation. Many of the vehicle command signs of the Bundeswehr are mostly in the color of weapons at company commander level to commander level ; Higher generals on duty posts with vehicle command signs often carry flags and stands, the color of which is based on their collar tabs.

Differentiation from beret color

The color of the beret is usually not the same as the weapon. In some cases, however, the color of the weapon and beret correspond (by chance) (usually in the case of the Jäger troops , Panzergrenadier troops , artillery troops and the medical troops ). While the weapon color alone does not always allow a clear affiliation to a military class, the combination of weapon color and beret color (or the mountain cap ) often allows a clear classification.

prehistory

The development of the first uniforms for the newly formed Bundeswehr was influenced by the plan for a joint army to be formed by Western European countries within the framework of the European Defense Community (EVG) . In order to visually bring the new German uniform a bit closer to the uniforms of other Western European countries, the German military planners foregoed too many links to the uniform tradition of the Wehrmacht when the uniform was introduced in 1955 - when the EVG's plan had actually already been abandoned . Therefore, the reintroduction of the traditional collar tabs and weapon colors was initially dispensed with. In order to differentiate between the types of armed forces in the army, characteristic metal emblems were used instead of traditional collar tabs in weapon colors, based on the model of the US armed forces . However, as early as 1956 there were calls in Bonn to reintroduce the traditional collar tabs in weapon color. Generals, on the other hand, wore the Larisch embroidery on a crimson ground cloth that is customary to this day since the formation of the Bundeswehr; General staff officers began to wear the traditional butt embroidery around the same time. However, these were initially embroidered on gray cloth; Since the end of 1956 at the latest, however, it has been on the now familiar crimson red cloth.

Reintroduction of weapon colors

By spring 1957 at the latest, the collar tabs were reintroduced for all soldiers, and with them the weapon colors. The choice of color was based heavily on the color scheme of the Wehrmacht, cf. plus the weapon colors of the Army of the Wehrmacht and the Air Force of the Wehrmacht . The most noticeable change was probably the now white weapon color of the military band, which in earlier German armed forces - as, incidentally, was still  associated with the infantry in the National People's Army .

At the beginning of the 1960s, the gun color found its way into more and more uniforms. In 1962, the shoulder pieces of the jacket of the officers' uniform received the advances in weapon color that are still in use today. At the same time, the uniform trousers of the service suit received tucks in gun color in the side seams. The uniform collars of the jacket of the service uniform of the crews and NCOs were also given advances in gun color in 1962 (officer's uniform since 1962 with the silver-colored piping of the collar, as it is today). In the 1960s and 70s, the caps and caps of NCOs without porters and crews adorned flap and lid piping in the color of the weapon. The slide-on loops ( strands) in weapon color for field suits , which are still common today, originate from this time . In 1964, the Federal President donated the troop flags with a flag ribbon in the weapon color of the troop unit, which are still customary today .

Elimination of weapon-colored pieces of uniform

Only in the Luftwaffe could the golden-yellow collar piping and tucks hold on to the headgear and collar; in the army, most of these characteristics of the type of service disappeared again by around the mid-1970s. The trouser piping is no longer found in the Bundeswehr today. Most recently, in 1997, when NCOs without porters and men were at the army, the gun-colored collar piping was deleted from the ZDv 37/10, which, however, had practically disappeared by the end of the 1980s.

Change of weapon colors

Except for a few changes, the armies and air forces still use the weapon colors that were common in the 1950s. There were changes in terms of the weapon colors for some branches of the army:

  • Technical troops : The predecessor troop types of the army logistics troops initially still had inconsistent weapon colors: The quartermaster troop (later renamed the supply troop ) initially received the weapon color light blue, while the field warrior troops (later renamed the repair troop ) already had today's medium blue . From the spring of 1959, the technical troops (collective term for repair and replenishment troops) consistently displayed the medium blue collar tabs known today; the light blue weapon color was omitted.
  • Panzerjägertruppe : The tank destroyers initially received dark green collar tabs. In 1959 the weapon color dark green was dropped; the tank destroyer troops then received first the well-known to date Hunter Green . In 1977/78 the Panzerjägertruppe switched from the infantry group to the armored combat group and was assigned pink as the new weapon color , which they were to keep until they were dissolved in 2006.
  • Panzergrenadierruppe : The troop type initially received medium green collar tabs. Analogous to the Panzerjägertruppe, this shade of green was dropped in March 1959 and the troops switched to today's Jägergrün, which, in contrast to the approach taken by the Panzerjägertruppe, remained unchanged when the Panzergrenadierruppe left the infantry unit and became part of the armored combat troops .
  • The Army Reconnaissance Force, which was newly formed in 2008 from the Field Intelligence Force, the Remote Scout Force and the Tank Reconnaissance Force, borrowed its golden yellow weapon color from its predecessors:
    • The armor color of the Panzer Reconnaissance Force has been golden yellow since the introduction of the collar tabs.
    • The field intelligence force , which was initially known as the front intelligence force , also wore gold-yellow collar tabs.
    • The long-distance spy troops also wore this weapon color in the end. They emerged from the tank reconnaissance force in 1962 and therefore initially received gold-yellow collar tabs. Between the end of 1962 and 1977/78 their weapon color was green, but then again until the end of the military class in 2008 golden yellow.
  • Army anti-aircraft troops: The troop type decommissioned in 2012 wore coral-red ( RAL 3016 ) collar tabs. With decommissioning, this weapon color was omitted.

Remarks

  1. Contrary to ZDv 37/10, according to TL 8455-0087, the ski blouse for men and NCOs (according to ZDv 37/10 only for officers as shown here ) does not have the color of the collar tabs, cf. Sew-on shoulder boards for the army and air force (piped or underlaid). (PDF) (No longer available online.) Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement, September 26, 2006, archived from the original on December 14, 2013 ; Retrieved December 12, 2013 . In practice, however, often, as in ZDv 37/10, with green flap piping, as is the case with mountain hunters, for example, organize the first veterans' meeting. (No longer available online.) In contrast, here as in accordance with TL 8455-0087 without piping: Digigraf: Digigraf's Home Page. Retrieved June 25, 2014 (excluding green piping).
  2. Contrary to ZDv 37/10, according to TL 8455-0087 ( memento of December 14, 2013 in the Internet Archive ) on the "jacket, representation", which is used by the guard battalion at the Federal Ministry of Defense and Music Corps, the epaulets for teams are also used and NCOs (according to ZDv 37/10 only for officers) highlighted in the color of the collar tabs instead of “just” as usual, cf. Sew-on shoulder boards for the army and air force (piped or underlaid). (PDF) (No longer available online.) 3. The collar of the service jacket and ski blouse is tied with a gold-colored cord made of metal web for generals , for other officers and middlemen with a silver-colored cord made of metal web , for non-commissioned officers with portepee with a light old gold-colored cord made of metal web.
  4. For air force uniform wearers of the rank group Generale flap tucks made of gold-colored metal web; for other air force uniform wearers of the rank group of officers as well as senior middlemen, flap tucks made of silver-colored metal web. Army uniform wearers do not wear boats.
  5. Generals (army and air force uniforms) wear a piping on the lid and two edge piping made of gold-colored metal web. Officers and senior middlemen (army and air force uniforms) wear a lid piping and two edge piping made of silver-colored metal web. Army uniform wearers only rarely wear peaked caps.

  11. Essentially, therefore, wearing army uniforms in the Bundeswehr Center for Geographic Information Systems .
  12. The EloKa telecommunication troops and the operational information troops are usually counted as separate troops. In the ZDv 37/10 their weapon color is not explicitly regulated. In the sense of ZDv 37/10 and for reasons of tradition, however, they wear the collar tabs of the telecommunications troops.
  13. In the army medical service, however, dark blue beret is only used in rare cases. Here mostly a burgundy beret through integration into airborne brigades.
  14. According to TL 8455-0028 pure white RAL 9010 for collar tabs . For slip-on loops (flat strands) according to TL 8455-0028 and underlay or piping shoulder flaps according to TL 8455-0087, deviating from RAL 9001 cream white .
  15. There are no command signs for particularly prominent posts for general staff officers. Generals in staff functions are not referred to as general staff officers , only captains and staff officers . Staff officers who have passed general staff training and who serve on posts with command signals (e.g. a colonel in charge of a brigade commander who has previously served in a staff department of the BMVg) become "regular" troop officers. They then no longer carry the designation i. G. and take off their special collar tabs.
