Both colored areas are in RGB = {209,134,00} ≈ orange, the impression "brown" is created by the surrounding gray.

In the additive color mixture, orange is the result of adding the secondary basic color yellow and the primary color red and is therefore already considered a tertiary color . This is the color mixture of the light color . The red used should already be an orange-red as the basic color. For body colors, orange can be mixed from a red and a yellow colorant in a suitable ratio.

A shade of orange with a low relative brightness is called brown . As the picture shows , the relative brightness of the area surrounding the color surface plays an important role. An orange with a high proportion of white is often referred to as apricot, at least in fashion and design. An orange tone that tends to red is called cinnabar or, in a pastel variant, coral , a tone that tends to yellow is called golden yellow , gold or saffron . If these are viewed as separate objects, they are “Quaternary colors” in the additive color space.

When displaying colors in web browsers , orange tones can be displayed within the RGB color space . The use of the color name "orange" in HTML as a web color shows this color tone, and the use of RGB = {255,165,0} in decimal or FFA500 in hexadecimal is equally important.

psychology

The color is set in its tones for refreshment, happiness and youth . It also stands for joy and maturity .

Orange is one of the less popular colors, but there are cultural differences. Informal surveys suggest that it has a more positive effect on people in many parts of Asia. This is mostly explained with other associations in the cultural areas, as explained in the Religion section . In addition, according to surveys, there is a certain connection with gender. Orange seems less unpopular with men than with women. According to surveys, it is also one of the less popular colors in Germany. In the Netherlands, on the other hand, people react to this rather positively, as they associate it with the “symbol of the royal family of Orange ” and, in retrospect, with the “shirt color of the national soccer team ”.

Orange is a warning color , it is used in road traffic and in the labeling of dangerous goods ( hazard symbols ). The RAL color marked “pure orange” has the color number RAL 2004 and the RGB coordinates R = E7, G = 5B and B = 12. It is the color of the disaster control. Orange is more conspicuous than a mere yellow because of the red cast . In Germany, municipal vehicles such as garbage trucks , road sweepers and snow plows , as well as work vehicles for local transport companies, are often painted orange. In addition, there were two attempts in the 1970s to define pure orange as the cross-company standard paintwork for public transport. This was on the one hand the European project Eurofima-C1-Lackierung and on the other hand the Swiss project VST-standard painting .

religion

In Buddhism and Hinduism Orange plays an important role. The robes of Buddhist monks are kept in this color, which stands for the highest level of human enlightenment. In tantric Hinduism, in tantric-Buddhist Vajrayana , in yoga , in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and consequently in some esoteric teachings, the postulated subtle energy centers between the body and the subtle body of the human being are called chakras . The color orange and its frequency are assigned to the second, the sacral chakra. In India's tantric culture it stands for selfless service , monasticism and renunciation .

In Northern Ireland it is a sign of Protestantism established by the Orange Order . For example, orange was used as a symbol of the Protestant churches at the German Protestant Kirchentag 2007 .

Design and fashion

1980s color palette

In the 1970s and 1980s, orange was a common fashion color in clothing , architecture, and product design . Intense orange tones are considered trendy , slightly tinted orange tones are considered Mediterranean . The fashion industry also often resorts to these bright tones. For this, shades of orange and orange are often given atmospheric-metaphorical color names in the fashion industry : apricot (pastel shade , orange with white), caramel (brownish orange), curry (shade between beige, yellow and orange), cognac (orange-cast Brown).

Martial arts

In many martial arts, such as Jiu Jitsu , Judo and Karate , a belt (Japanese obi ) is worn as part of martial arts clothing (Japanese keikogi ). The orange-colored belt represents the level of knowledge of Budoka and is reserved for the lower student grades (Japanese Kyū degree).

politics

Parties sometimes use the luminosity of orange tones as a basic color for identification and with the expressive triad of colors orange-red-green for identifying party-political documents. Broken oranges are, in turn, opportunities for attack by the opposition.

For the 2004 presidential election in Ukraine , Viktor Yushchenko chose orange as the campaign color. Due to election fraud, he was initially defeated, which led to a re-election with his victory. The protest storm was consequently called the "orange" revolution .

Some political parties use orange as a color code, in Germany the Ecological Democratic Party and the Pirate Party Germany , in Austria the Alliance Future Austria , in Spain Ciudadanos , in Turkey the AKP , in Poland Twój Ruch and in India the Bharatiya Janata Party .
