The Electronic Warfare Battalion 932 ( EloKaBtl 932 ), stationed in Frankenberg (Eder) , is an association of the EloKa telecommunications unit of the German Armed Forces . Until 2002 this association belonged to the army , then to the armed forces base and from July 2017 to the cyber and information space . In addition to achievements in the technical field, it became known above all through the terrorist attack in Kabul in 2003 , in which several soldiers of the battalion were killed.

history

In June 1962, the telecommunications battalion (EloKa) 320 was set up from various telecommunications units in the newly built Burgwald barracks. The Frankenberg soldiers worked both with the stationary systems in Frankenberg and with mobile devices near the German-German border. In the 1990s, the association was reclassified to Telecommunications Regiment 320 and in 2003 transferred to the Electronic Warfare Battalion 932. In the same year, the association was recognized by the Association of Old Crows , a professional association for electronic warfare , as the best military unit in this field. On October 25, 2011, Defense Minister de Maizière announced that the Frankenberg (Eder) site would be retained and that, as part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr, the number of soldiers would only be reduced from around 1000 to 700, with the majority of those doing military service being eliminated as part of the suspension the military is. In addition, several million euros should be invested in the renovation and modernization of the site. On June 23, 2012, the Burgwald barracks celebrated its 50th birthday.

Structure / subordination

As a part of the EloKa troop, the battalion was subordinate to telecommunications area 93 in Daun , which was disbanded on March 31, 2013. Since then, the association has been directly subordinate to the Strategic Reconnaissance Command (KSA) in Rheinbach . The highest superior position in terms of service has been the Cyber and Information Room Command (Kdo CIR) since July 2017 . The EloKaBtl 932 consists of the staff and five companies . The battalion is led by a lieutenant colonel . The first company is the headquarters and supply company .

Affiliated to the battalion is the branch office of the Augustdorf medical support center, including a dentist group and a family care center (FBZ), not least because of the high workload of the association.

tasks

The Electronic Warfare Battalion 932 operates electronic warfare and telecommunications reconnaissance with the systems in the Burgwald barracks and mobile in the areas of operation of the Bundeswehr . This makes it the only battalion that covers both areas of the EloKa with its capabilities. Due to the specialization, the soldiers of the battalion have to cope with a relatively high operational load. You are one of the Bundeswehr's crisis reaction forces . The association's operational area is Afghanistan .

The battalion's NRF platoon is ready for action and deployable in the shortest possible time in order to support the reaction forces in crisis areas with the means of electronic combat.

The battalion also supports the regional security and support forces of the Hessen State Command in training.

Uniform and badge

The members of the battalion wear the uniforms of the Bundeswehr according to the central guideline A1-2630 / 0-9804. Since the association is part of the Cyber and Information Room Command, naval , air force and army uniform carriers serve there . In routine service, all soldiers in the unit wear field suits and differ only in rank loops according to the armed forces . Sometimes the soldiers of the deployment contingents wear field suits with desert camouflage print for a short time before they are deployed and after their return.

The internal association badge is the Frankenberger “F” on a light blue background surrounded by a golden cord. It is crowned by the Frankenberg prince's crown. The internal association badge is worn with the service suit on the right breast pocket, furthermore with the field suit as a badge on the flap of the right breast pocket or as a Velcro badge on the right upper arm. The battalion's motto is: " Scientia potentia est " ( Latin : "Knowledge is power").

Attack in Kabul

The EloKaBtl 932 gained notoriety on June 7, 2003. On that day in Kabul , Afghanistan , a suicide bomber blew himself up in a taxi next to two buses that were taking soldiers from the association to the airport. Four soldiers fell in the explosion, which completely destroyed one of the buses. 29 others were injured, some seriously. It was the first time that German soldiers were specifically targeted in a suicide attack.

In retrospect, voices were heard that criticized both the inadequate assessment of the risk situation in the country of deployment and the lack of armor protection for the soldiers. Local decision-makers came under fire for preferring fast bus transport to safer but more cumbersome transfer in Wolf- type armored SUVs .

A memorial stone at the entrance of the Burgwald barracks commemorates the four fallen EloKa soldiers Andrejas Beljo (28) and Jörg Baasch (25) from Telecommunications Reconnaissance Regiment 940 and Carsten Kühlmorgen (32) and Helmi Jimenez-Paradies (29) from Telecommunications Regiment 320 .
