The Bundeswehr Center for Geoinformation ( ZGeoBw ), founded on March 11, 2003, is the central facility for geoinformation in the Bundeswehr . The commander of the ZGeoBw also heads the Bundeswehr's geographic information service (GeoInfoDBw).

The ZGeoBw is based in Euskirchen and was directly subordinate to the Cyber and Information Room Command (KdoCIR) on July 1, 2017 . It is spread over eight locations. Significant shares are in Euskirchen and Fürstenfeldbruck .

The ZGeoBw is a federal research institute , a member of the working group of departmental research institutions as well as the working group of the surveying administrations of the federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany (AdV) and in the standing committee for geographical names (StAGN).

history

The ZGeoBw was established on March 11, 2003 as the Office for Geoinformation of the Federal Armed Forces (AGeoBw) from the previous offices of the Office for Military Geosystems (AMilGeo), Office for Defense Geophysics (AWGeophys) in the Mont Royal barracks in Traben-Trarbach with the School for Defense Geophysics ( SWGeophys) in Fürstenfeldbruck, the topography troops (TopTr) of the army including the MilGeo military area and parts of the Air Force Office (LwA) and the naval support command (MUKdo).

In 2007 and as part of the realignment of the Bundeswehr , it was decided to relocate most of the AGeoBw to Euskirchen and to give up the Traben-Trarbach and Fürstenfeldbruck locations. The move of the parts from Traben-Trarbach was completed in 2012.

As part of the Bundeswehr reform, the AGeoBw was dissolved with effect from October 1, 2013 and transferred to the Center for Geoinformation of the Bundeswehr (ZGeoBw).

On April 29, 2015, the Multinational Support Group (MN GSG) was formally put into service as an additional organizational element by the commander of the Strategic Reconnaissance Command, Major General Jürgen Setzer . The mission of the multinational support group is to provide GeoInfo data for future NATO and EU missions.

On July 1, 2017, the Multinational METOC Support Group (MN MSG) was set up at the ZGeoBw in Euskirchen. Via the MN MSG, the specialist personnel in NATO and the EU are provided with standardized weather data at all times, especially in operational and training areas, which enables an improved assessment of the situation in advance of planned activities.
