The Trierischer Volksfreund is a daily newspaper from Trier . The newspaper is popularly referred to as "TV" or "People's Friend". It is part of the Saarbrücker newspaper group around the Saarbrücker Zeitung . The sold circulation is 66,484 copies, a decrease of 33.6 percent since 1998.

The publishing house Volksfreund-Druckerei Nikolaus Koch GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei , which in turn is majority owned by the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe with a 56 percent majority . The newspaper is printed in the company's own print shop in Trier.

history

The newspaper was founded in 1875 by Nikolaus Koch and Nikolaus Philippi. Originally published as a Trier advertising paper, the newspaper initially appeared three times a week, and later daily. On September 25, 1878, the newspaper appeared for the first time under the title Trierischer Volksfreund , from 1903 even twice a day. It was politically close to the Center Party .

On April 30, 1938, the newspaper was banned by the National Socialists . From 1946 the newspaper was reissued, initially under the title Trierische Volkszeitung , but since 1949 again under the title that still exists today.

Since the Trierische Landeszeitung ceased operations in 1974, "TV" has been the only daily newspaper in the area of the former Trier administrative district . In 2003, the newspaper was awarded the Local Journalism Prize of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation . Thomas Roth has been the editor-in-chief since October 1, 2017 .

In July 2014, the publisher commissioned a new printing press, a rotary offset machine type Cortina KBA ( Koenig & Bauer ) in operation.

publishing company

The newspaper has been published since January 1, 2013 by the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe , which has taken over the majority through the Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei . Previously, the paper belonged to the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group , which had held a 15 percent stake in Trierischer Volksfreund since 1974 . After the publisher Luise Koch's death in 1993, the company's shares finally came to the Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei , in which the Holtzbrinck Group held a majority stake of 52.33 percent. This stake was transferred to the co-partner GSB in the course of 2012 and then sold to the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe.

The Volksfreund will continue to be managed independently, both in terms of editing and operations . The newspaper still has a full editorial team , but also receives reports and comments from the Berlin capital city editorial team from the Berliner Medienservice GmbH (BMS), which belongs to the Saarbrücker newspaper group, and their news pool , whose editorial team is based at the Saarbrücker Zeitung in Saarbrücken.

Since 1996, "TV" has also held shares in the local advertising paper, Wochenspiegel . The Bundeskartellamt became aware of this acquisition in the course of another procedure in summer 2004 and initiated merger control proceedings. The merger led to the strengthening of the dominant position of the Volksfreund-Druckerei on the regional advertising market - the entire area of distribution of the Trierischer Volksfreunds - and thus also to safeguard this position on the relevant reader market. The Federal Cartel Office therefore prohibited the merger between Volksfreund-Druckerei Nikolaus Koch GmbH, which was then part of the Holtzbrinck Group, and Wochenspiegel GmbH & Co. KG in May 2005.
