Palatine Merkur in Zweibrücken

The Palatinate Merkur (PM) is a daily newspaper based in Zweibrücken . The circulation area of the newspaper is the southwest of the former Bavarian area Palatinate . In today's territorial boundaries, in addition to the independent city of Zweibrücken, it includes the Verbandsgemeinde Zweibrücken-Land and the Verbandsgemeinde Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben of the district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as Bexbach , Blieskastel , Gersheim , Homburg and Kirkel, the largest part of the Saarpfalz district in Saarland .

The publishing company of the PM is Zweibrücker Druckerei und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH . It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei GmbH . This in turn is part of the Rheinische Post media group .

The management of the Zweibrücker Druckerei und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH is carried out by the managing director of the Saarbrücker Zeitungsverlag, the editor-in-chief of the PM by the editor-in-chief of the Saarbrücker Zeitung . There is an independent local editorial office in Zweibrücken . The newspaper is printed in the printing house of the Saarbrücker Verlag.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the Palatinate Merkur competes with the Rheinpfalz published in Ludwigshafen . In Saarland it competes as a title on the reader market with the Saarbrücker Zeitung. In the advertising market, however, it is listed as a partial edition of the Saarbrücker Zeitung. The total sold edition of the Pfälzischer Merkur is currently 5291 copies.

history

The Palatinate Merkur was founded in 1713 and is, after the Hildesheimer Allgemeine Zeitung founded in 1705 , the second oldest of the German daily newspapers that appear today.

In 1980 the publishing house of the neighboring Saarbrücker Zeitung bought the Palatinate Merkur . The title and the publishing company were formally obtained independently. The Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei GmbH was at this point in the majority ownership of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group . The Holtzbrinck Group, together with the Trierischer Volksfreund later acquired, formed the Saarbrücken newspaper group from the three titles .

In 2012, Holtzbrinck gave up its regional newspaper business and sold its 52.33 percent stake in Saarbrücker Zeitungsverlag to the minority shareholder Gesellschaft für staatsbürgerliche Bildung Saar mbH (GSB) . The GSB would hold the shares only temporary. As early as January 1, 2013, she sold 56 percent of the company to the Rheinische Post Mediengruppe , which took over the management of the company and integrated the group's daily newspapers into its group while maintaining the corporate structure.
