history

Edition of the Aachener Nachrichten dated May 8, 1945

The Aachener Nachrichten has been published since January 24, 1945, making it the longest uninterrupted newspaper in Germany . They are also the first licensed newspaper in Germany and the only one that was founded by the Psychological Warfare Division (PWD) before the end of World War II , because Aachen had already been captured by Allied troops in October 1944 . For the newspaper, the US chose PWD, whose aim was to re-educate the Germans Democrats to the Nazi unloaded Social Democratic printer Henry Holland and the unloaded journalists Otto Pesch out. In the publishing house of the former "Aachener Anzeiger - Politisches Tageblatt" a printing press survived the war, so that the old publishing house could be used accordingly. Hollands and Pesch initially worked under the guidance of a three-person PWD press team and initially under strict censorship. The first edition had a circulation of 12,000 copies, consisted of four pages and cost 20 pfennigs. The second edition of January 31, 1945 already appeared in an edition of 18,909 copies, although after the previous months of the war only just under 10,000 people lived in the city of Aachen.

As the first free paper - without Nazi propaganda - the Aachener Nachrichten was able to announce the surrender of the Wehrmacht on May 8, 1945. Apart from the Aachener Nachrichten , apparently only the newspaper Flensburger Nachrichten appeared in Germany that day, which announced this news. Flensburg, which had hardly been destroyed, was not yet fully occupied at this point in time. The last Reich government in the special area Mürwik still used the Reichsender Flensburg in the Flensburg city center for announcements , where the Flensburg newspaper was also located. An original copy of the newspaper from Aachen with the well-known title “The war is over!” Hangs today in the Bonn House of History . On June 27, 1945, Heinrich Hollands was granted the license for Aachener Nachrichten , which was the first license for a German newspaper in German hands. Heinrich Hollands thus became the first publisher of Aachener Nachrichten . Otto Pesch became the first German editor.

Edition

The circulation of the Aachener Nachrichten is reported together with the Aachener Zeitung . The two newspapers have lost a lot of circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 3.5% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 5.7%. It is currently 89,717 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 86.5 percent.

Political orientation

The Aachener Nachrichten is a bit further to the left than its sister paper , the Aachener Zeitung . This is probably still due to the fact that with the beginning of membership of the British zone of occupation, the newspapers had to have a party orientation. The Aachener Nachrichten thus became a newspaper closely related to the SPD . Since the allocation of the scarce paper was based on the voting shares of the parties, the Aachener Nachrichten became the smaller newspaper in its area of distribution according to the voting shares of the party. The party affiliation ended in 1949.
