Eckardt Opitz

Eckardt Opitz (born December 29, 1938 in Bad Bevensen ) is a German officer ( lieutenant colonel i. G. a. D.) and historian .

Life

Opitz grew up in Nordheide. He passed his Abitur in Hamburg and then did military service in the Bundeswehr. He reached the rank of lieutenant in the reserve.

He then studied German , history (state examination) and comparative literature at the University of Hamburg , then history and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He was a student of Walther Hubatsch and was with him at the Philosophical Faculty in 1968 with the dissertation Austria and Brandenburg in the Swedish-Polish War 1655-1660. Preparation and implementation of the campaigns to Denmark and Pomerania to become Dr. phil. PhD.

He was then reinstated and used as a troop officer ( captain ). Among other things, he was a lecturer at the officers' school and the parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defense . From 1971 to 1973 Opitz, himself a member of the SPD , was a consultant and adjutant to the then Defense Minister Helmut Schmidt . He retired in 1973 as Lieutenant Colonel i. G. off.

He was a member of the founding committees of the Bundeswehr universities in Hamburg and Munich . From 1974 to 2003 he was Professor of Modern History in the Pedagogy Department at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg-Jenfeld . In 1989 he founded the course in history. From 1999 he was Vice President of the Bundeswehr University. Before that, he was twice speaker of the Pedagogy Department and member of the Senate. His academic students include Michael Busch , Jörg Hillmann , Sven Lange and Peter Löw .

From 1981 to 1988 he was chairman of the study society for time problems in Bonn and editor of the journal Contributions to Political Education . He was also President of the Scientific Forum for International Security (WIFIS) in Hamburg.

In 1993 he became a lecturer and later tutor for history at the Duchy of Lauenburg Foundation . From 1997 he published the Lauenburg Academy Colloquia and the Foundation's series of publications.

Opitz published military history , regional history and security policy writings in Verlag Dr. Dieter Winkler . In particular, he is concerned with the history of Schleswig-Holstein .
