Expansion of the urban area

In the east of Jenfeld, the district boundary coincides with the state border of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein . In the south, the district boundary between Jenfeld and Billstedt coincides with the course of the motorway ( A 24 ). The Hamburg-Jenfeld motorway junction is also located there (junction no. 2).

Watercourses

In the east Jenfeld is traversed by the Schleemer Bach and the Barsbek flowing into it, before it feeds the Öjendorfer See in Billstedt to the south and finally flows into the Bille . The Jenfelder Bach rises in the center of Jenfeld , which in turn flows into the Schleemer Bach in Billstedt. In addition, the Jenfelder Moorpark pond is located in the northwest of the district.

history

The name Jenfeld is derived from Gelevelde , which means "yellow field" and refers to the sandy soil of the area. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1304. From the middle of the 14th century it belonged to the Reinbek monastery . When the monastery property was dissolved in the course of the Reformation , the village came back into sovereign possession in 1529 and was assigned to the Reinbek office.

After the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein by Prussia in 1867, Jenfeld was assigned to the newly founded Stormarn district . With the introduction of the Prussian municipal constitution in 1889, the Barsbüttel district came into being . In 1927 Jenfeld was incorporated into the city ​​of Wandsbek . Jenfeld housed three barracks from 1933, the Douaumont barracks , Lettow-Vorbeck barracks and von Estorff barracks . Today, some of these have been converted into residential areas or the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg . In 1938 Jenfeld came to Hamburg together with Wandsbek due to the Greater Hamburg Law passed in 1937 . With effect from May 11, 1951, the district administration in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (1949) divided the then Wandsbek-Ost district and the Jenfeld district emerged.

Various HVV bus routes connect Jenfeld with the city center, Wandsbek-Markt, Farmsen , Rahlstedt , Barsbüttel and Billstedt .

From 1954 to 1960 tram line 16 ran from Hagenbeck's zoo via Wandsbek-Markt to Jenfeld. With the start of construction of the subway to Wandsbek, the tram service to Jenfeld was stopped.

education

There are two district schools in Jenfeld where all school-leaving qualifications can be obtained, the Max Schmeling district school and the Otto Hahn district school. Primary schools exist in Jenfelder Strasse, Oppelner Strasse, Charlottenburger Strasse and Öjendorfer Damm. There is a special school for mentally handicapped children in the Bekkamp.

For soldiers of the Bundeswehr, there is the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Bundeswehr Hamburg in Jenfeld .

Jenfeld has a large number of independent and municipal institutions for children and young people: House of Youth, street social work , youth club, youth center , free cultural initiative , Your Life - advice for girls and young women, construction playground at Gleiwitzer Bogen , youth social work by the parish Der Gute Hirte and the Jenfelder coffee pot , a neighborhood meeting place for children and young people, and the Jenfeld youth center [JuZ] in the moor park.

New Jenfelder Au district

On the 35 hectare site of the former Lettow-Vorbeck barracks , a new urban quarter with around 770 residential units, 630 of which are in new buildings, as well as an area for residential-friendly business. Jenfelder Au is also intended to be the first district in Hamburg in which a new type of drainage and energy generation concept is being implemented on a large scale under the name Hamburg WaterCycle. Another component of the energy concept will be the use of renewable energies, 50 percent of the energy is to be generated on site. In 2009 the project received the International Urban Landscape Award (IULA).

Center of the Hamburg Football Association

The Hamburg Football Association has had its headquarters in Jenfeld since 2001 and also operates its sports school there. The facilities (sports hall, artificial and natural grass pitch) are temporarily available to local clubs.

In September 2003, the symbolic foundation stone for the “central Jenfeld square” was laid in Denksteinweg / Bei den Höfe. The center of the central square is the existing memorial stone with its surrounding three oaks. For the 700th anniversary of Jenfeld in the summer of 2004, the newly created traffic-calmed area, which can only be entered at walking pace, shone in new splendor with its adjoining houses.

Jenfeld hit the headlines nationwide in 2005 because of the Jessica murder case . At that time, Jenfeld's parents had neglected their seven-year-old daughter so much that she starved to death. The parents were subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.
