The Billstedt underground station is a larger underground station and bus station in the eastern Hamburg district of Billstedt ( Hamburg-Mitte district ) on the U2 underground line and the U4 underground line , which ends here.

history

The opening of the station, which was planned as "Billstedter Platz", the name of the nearby shopping center at the time, took place on September 28, 1969. For six months, the stop was the end of the U3 line , which had been extended up to this point , until the station opened Merkenstraße on May 31, 1970. Since a line branch swap in 2009, the U2 line has been running on this branch. The U4, which opened on November 29, 2012, ends here.

From 2007 to 2011 the bus station was extensively refurbished and the underground station was also renovated in the process. In total, the measures cost around 5.5 million euros. The station can be reached barrier-free . There are 92 “bike and ride” parking spaces.

Construction and operation

The subway station is located in a cut and is built over like a bridge with the bus station, where many city bus and metro bus lines connect the surrounding districts with the rapid transit system. The station with two central platforms in the lowlands is equipped with four platform tracks. There is a large sweeping track on both sides of the station. The western facility was originally supposed to be supplemented with an operating workshop, but this was only completed between 2017 and 2020. Until the start of construction, only the width of the cut to the Legienstrasse underground station indicated this.

The two middle platform tracks are used to insert and release reinforcement trains. Original plans envisaged Billstedt as a branching station with a threading operation made possible by the four platform tracks, whereby the one line behind Merkenstrasse to Oststeinbek and Glinde was to be continued. A second, not built, stretch should lead via Kirchsteinbek to Mümmelmannsberg . This was rejected because Mümmelmannsberg was finally connected via Merkenstrasse.
