The Merkenstraße is a stop on the underground - line U2 in the Hamburg district of Billstedt in the district of Hamburg-Mitte . For twenty years, from 1970 to 1990, it was the final stop on the U3 line . Around 9,700 people entering and exiting the bus stop every day (Mon-Fri, 2017).
history
The Merkenstrasse underground station was opened on May 31, 1970 as the eastern end of the line U3, which had been extended up to this point. This function was not actually intended for him for a long time, but was only to exist until the then planned underground line to Glinde in Schleswig-Holstein continued. However, due to the lack of agreement and the austerity policy of the Senate since the mid-1970s, further expansion projects were canceled. In 1987 further construction began, now for the new Mümmelmannsberg housing estate . In 1990 the line to the new Mümmelmannsberg terminus was put into operation. Since the line swap in 2009, the U2 line has been running on the Billstedter branch.
The underground station is barrier-free. The barrier-free expansion began in 2016 and was completed on January 26, 2018.
Construction and operation
The tunnel stop with central platform has exits on both sides. It is the only station on the Billstedt route that is under a street.
Up until 1990 there was a sweeping track where the main line to Mümmelmannsberg is today. The trains could be directed to the other track via a double track change in front of the stop, which also no longer exists today. The internal stop abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "MS".
Trivia
In 1974, scenes from the film " The Odessa Files " were filmed in the Merkenstrasse stop . This film is set in 1963 - 7 years before the stop opened.
