The Burgstraße underground station is a tunnel stop on the Hamburg underground lines U2 and U4 in the Hamm district . The underground station has around 20,300 people entering and leaving the station every day (Mon-Fri, 2017).
history
The Burgstrasse underground station went into operation in January 1967. The system was part of the first stage of the underground construction from Berliner Tor to Billstedt , together with it the route to the Horner Rennbahn station was opened. The underground replaced the heavily frequented tram lines 1 and 7 to Billstedt, the tram line 2 to Horner Rennbahn via Hamm-Nord, as well as the bus lines of the Hamburg-Holstein transport company (VHH) going east ( Oststeinbek , Glinde , Trittau ) from the Hamburg central bus station ), which were withdrawn to Horner Rennbahn (later Billstedt or Merkenstrasse, later Steinfurther Allee).
At that time, the station was built as a transfer facility to the remaining tram lines 5 to Horner Rennbahn via Hamm-Nord, 15 towards Winterhude - Hoheluft - Eimsbüttel - Altona and 19 via Berliner Tor to Billbrook. The tracks were laid in such a way that the passenger area was in the middle, they also served as a turning loop. City buses have been running on these routes since the tram was discontinued.
Burgstraße was previously served by the U3 line, so the trains in the direction of the city center continued from Berliner Tor on the 1912 ring line . The U2 line has been running here since 2009 and crosses the city center from Berliner Tor on a route built in the late 1960s. It has also been served by the U4 line since November 29, 2012.
Expansion and location
Burgstraße underground station is located north of Hammer Landstraße , between the intersection with Burgstraße, which gives it its name, and the Sievekingdamm junction . The station has an approximately 120-meter-long central platform in a simple lower position, from which two flights of stairs lead to an access building directly above the subway area.
Since December 2014 the platform has been accessible via an elevator. As part of the renovation work, the middle section of the platform was raised and structural extensions to guide people were added to the staircases.
The Burgstrasse underground station was originally intended for another underground line, the so-called Alsterhalbring . The planned full expansion would have required another platform north of the existing facility.
The Berliner Tor station is around 1.3 kilometers away and the Hammer Kirche underground station is around 950 meters away .
The Burgstraße underground station is the junction with the Hamburg bus network; the half-ring Metrobus line 25 to Winterhude - Eppendorf - Eimsbüttel - Altona stops here . The abbreviation of the Hamburger Hochbahn for the underground station is "BG".
