The Metro Station HafenCity University 's links to the Hamburg subway - U4 in the district of HafenCity . The station abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "HC", named after the HafenCity University Hamburg . The working title during planning and at the beginning of construction was Lohsepark .
history
For the development of HafenCity with a new subway line to be built, the groundbreaking ceremony was carried out on August 23, 2007 by Mayor Ole von Beust . Construction work on the HafenCity University stop began in February 2008, and the topping-out ceremony took place on May 11, 2010 . The interior work followed from summer 2010 to spring 2012.
The U4 and its new stops were opened on November 29, 2012. The HafenCity University stop was initially only served on weekends and public holidays; regular operations began on August 10, 2013. Later, up to 35,000 passengers will use the U4 every day. The HafenCity Universität underground station was the terminus of the U4 until December 6, 2018, when the line to Hamburg-Elbbrücken station , a planned transfer hub with the S-Bahn to Harburg, was opened.

The underground station is 16.5 meters below ground level, i.e. 9 meters below normal height zero . The platform hall with the central platform is located in a west-east orientation, is 200 meters long, 16 meters wide and 10 meters high. Access from two entrances in Versmannstrasse and two in Lohsepark is via intermediate levels at both ends of the platform. An elevator at the west end leads to the middle of the platform.
The design is based on a design by the Raupach architecture office, the Pfarré Lighting Design lighting planning office and the industrial designers Stauss & Pedrazzini from Munich, who had won the previous design competition. The Raupach architecture firm had already designed the Wettersteinplatz underground station for the Munich underground . In the HafenCity Universität subway station, the walls are clad with dark brown, smooth metal plates with the station name stamped into them. There are also metal plates on the ceiling, but these are often perforated to reduce noise. The station is illuminated by twelve light containers, each weighing six tons, with the dimensions of 20-foot containers (6.5 m length × 2.8 m width × 2.8 m height), which hang lengthways from the ceiling. They consist of a steel frame that is clad with frosted glass and inside which 280 colored LEDs provide different lighting moods that can be adapted to the time of day, season or weather and are reflected by the metal wall panels. The shape of the light containers and the wall and ceiling design should be reminiscent of port elements. The platform is also illuminated by normal fluorescent tubes.
The subway station received the Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design 2013 from the International Association of Lighting Designers.

To the west of the subway station there is a double track change , which was needed to bring the trains to the other track for the return journey (short turns on the platform). The tunnel in the direction of Elbbrücken connects to the east of the platform, this section of the route was initially used as a parking facility as long as the station was the final stop. The distance to the Überseequartier underground station is 520 meters.
Light and music performances
On weekends and public holidays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., light and music compositions are performed every full hour in the underground station. The light containers change their color to match classical music, which for operational reasons is only played on the mezzanine floor. Outside these times, constant, slow color transitions take place.
