The Hamburg-Elbbrücken station is a junction of the Hamburg U-Bahn and the Hamburg S-Bahn in the Elbbrückenzentrum , a part of the HafenCity at the northern end of the Freihafenelbbrücke and the Elbbrücke railway with a stop for the S-Bahn and a stop for the U- Train. The stations are crossed by Zweibrückenstrasse . Several long-distance railway tracks and the Freihafenelbbrücke road run between the two , over which a pedestrian bridge , the so-called “ Skywalk ”, runs. The plan is to open up public transport to eastern HafenCity, parts of Rothenburgsort and northern Veddel . The subway station at the hub opened on December 6, 2018 and went into operation on December 7, 2018. The S-Bahn station was symbolically opened on December 14, 2019, and it went into operation on December 15, 2019.
history
At almost the same position as the current S-Bahn stop, a “under construction” stop is shown on a Pharus city map from 1905. This planning was one of the follow-up measures on the occasion of the renovation of the railway systems for the opening of Hamburg Central Station in December 1906 on the route from Hamburg Central Station to Hamburg-Harburg via the so-called " pillar railway ". After the Oberhafen stop on May 1, 1908, the Elbbrücke stop was opened on July 1, 1908. In 1944, these stops were stopped, but the platforms were still there for decades.
A subway or elevated train station at the Elbe bridges was planned for the Alster half-ring in the 1920s and 1950s . For this purpose, the second level of the Freihafenelbbrücke should accommodate the tracks on the route to the free port.
Elbbrücken underground station
The Elbbrücken underground station at the junction is an above-ground stop operated by Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HHA). The opening took place on December 6, 2018. An old working title was Chicago Square . The station abbreviation of the HHA is " EB ".
Planning and construction process
On January 15, 2013, the Hamburg Senate decided to continue building the U4 by around one kilometer and by one more station to the Elbe bridges. Construction on the extension began on June 21, 2013. Two streets in the station area had to be relocated, a bunker demolished and an area of the BSH (former ship warehouse, so-called “Kika”), on which several buildings stood, had to be cleared.
Construction of the actual station began on April 7, 2015.
station
The underground station is located directly on the north bank of the Norderelbe and on the west side of the Freihafenelbbrücke . It has thus been decided that the upper part of the Freihafenbrücke, which was originally intended for a subway route, will not be used if the U4 is possibly extended to Veddel . The two platforms are on a bridge over the relocated Zweibrückenstrasse.
The side platforms are 130 meters long, so the north end of the platform is still in a curve. If it were to be extended, the platform would be expanded by 13 meters to the south. The platforms are connected by a pedestrian bridge, a so-called "skywalk". With the completion of the parallel Elbbrücken S-Bahn station , this bridge was extended over the Freihafenbrücke road and the long-distance railway tracks to the S-Bahn and thus offers a weather-protected transfer option.
A double switch connection between the tracks has been set up in front of the station and thus in the uphill area out of the tunnel, as this is not possible because of the northern Elbe behind it.
The design of the underground station is the result of a tender that the architects Gerkan, Marg und Partner won. External steel girders support the inner glass facade in tubular form.
opening
After five and a half years of construction, the Elbbrücken underground station was officially opened on December 6, 2018. Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher and Enak Ferlemann , State Secretary from the Federal Ministry of Transport , opened the station.

Elbbrücken S-Bahn station
The Elbbrücken S-Bahn station is a stop on the Harburger S-Bahn line of the Hamburg S-Bahn . The stop is directly north of the Elbe railway bridge over the Norderelbe and ends a few meters before the bridge over the Billhafen . Construction began in August 2017. Originally, the station was to be opened together with the subway station for the timetable change in December 2018, but following unexpected problems with the building site and the resulting changes to the statics, the opening of the S-Bahn stop had to be postponed become. The symbolic opening of the S-Bahn platform by Tschentscher, Ferlemann and DB Infrastructure Director Ronald Pofalla took place on December 14, 2019 . The S-Bahn platform officially went into operation for the 2019/2020 timetable change on December 15, 2019. The opening took place a year later than planned.
The German railway forecasted costs end of 2015, with 43.39 million euros. In June 2018, the publicly known cost forecast was increased to 57 million euros. In December 2018, the Hamburger Abendblatt wrote that Deutsche Bahn had confirmed an increase in costs to 69 million euros.
470 S-Bahn trains stop at the station every day. Studies expect around 17,000 to 20,000 passengers per day, the number of people changing between the U-Bahn and S-Bahn is forecast at 6400 people per day.
The additional stop increases the travel time between the Veddel and Hammerbrook stations by just under two minutes.
Typology
The stop has two outer platforms, each 210 meters long and 6 meters wide. The S-Bahn line runs in this area in an arc with a steep gradient between two bridges. As a result, the platforms have a longitudinal incline of up to 25 per thousand. Warning signs make station passengers aware of this situation. In addition, in some areas of the platforms there are five meter long horizontal platforms, which are separated from the rest of the platform by railings.

Skywalk
Since between the underground and the S-station distance railway tracks of the railway line trough-Eickel-Hamburg , the Hanover-Hamburg railway and the Hamburg freight rail bypass and the road links of the Freihafenelbbrücke run, the stations via a bridge, the so-called "to be Skywalk “, connected. This is 65 meters long and nine meters high. It was installed in May 2018. The cost of this structure is estimated at 9.17 million euros.
