The Harburger S-Bahn is a 22.732 kilometer long railway line in the south of Hamburg . 22.262 km are electrified with 1200 V direct current, the remaining 470 m with 15 kV 16.7 Hz alternating current. 4,422 km of the route run in the tunnel. It begins at Hamburg Central Station and leads via Harburg to Neugraben . For the most part, it runs parallel to the Niederelbebahn and is now part of the Hamburg S-Bahn lines S3 , which lead via Neugraben to Buxtehude and Stade , as well as the S31 .
course
The line branches off 436 m east of the main station from the Bergedorf S-Bahn, where it crosses the tracks of the long-distance railway to Berlin and Lübeck after a steep ramp . After passing the Hammerbrook stop, which is located on a concrete viaduct , the route crosses the southern freight bypass , reaches the Elbbrücken stop, where you can change to the subway, and then crosses the northern Elbe. From here on, its course is directly parallel to the Niederelbebahn . The Veddel and Wilhelmsburg stops follow one after the other before it branches off from the Niederelbebahn and descends into a tunnel. Here the station Harburg , the three-track Kehrbahnhof Harburg-Rathaus and the Heimfeld stop are passed before the route again runs above ground and parallel to the Niederelbebahn. After passing the Neuwiedenthal station, the Neugraben station follows , where there is a parking facility. This station is followed by a system change station, where the S-Bahn railcars change from power rails to overhead lines. The trains then use the Niederelbebahn, which was expanded to make it suitable for the S-Bahn in 2006 and 2007.
history
After Harburg-Wilhelmsburg was incorporated into Hamburg in 1937, the Harburg-Neugraben section was included in the Hamburg S-Bahn tariff. After the Hamburg Transport Association was founded in 1967, this line was known as "S3", although locomotive-hauled trains continued to run on it. The long-distance railway tracks were used between Hamburg Central Station and Hamburg-Harburg Station . Although this section of the route has four tracks, one pair of tracks was reserved for freight train traffic.
Due to the severe destruction of the Port of Hamburg, the Oberhafen and Elbbrücke stops were not put back into operation after 1945.
While the population in the Hamburg districts of Hausbruch and Neugraben-Fischbek grew rapidly in the 1960s and 70s due to the construction of new large housing estates, the connection to Hamburg city center remained poor: in order to reach Hamburg Central Station , the trains in Harburg had to change direction, there was also no regular timetable .
On September 24, 1983, the direct-current S-Bahn from Hamburg Central Station to Harburg Town Hall opened . The new connection between the main train station and Berliner Tor was removed from the tram . In the further course a new stopping point Hammerbrook was created . The route runs parallel to the long-distance railway between Hamburg's Elbe bridges and Harburg. The Veddel and Wilhelmsburg stops were replaced by new systems. In 1984 the direct-current S-Bahn (lines “S3” and “S31”) was extended from downtown Harburg to Neugraben. Its route runs from the Heimfeld district for about seven kilometers south, parallel to the Niederelbebahn.
A new S-Bahn stop was built near the Neuwiedenthal housing estate . The Neugraben train station was expanded to five tracks along with a parking facility and the Wilhelminian-style reception building was replaced by a concrete-style transfer system from the 1980s. An extension of the S-Bahn to the also densely populated Fischbek was waived in order not to diminish the importance of the newly created (shopping) center in Neugraben.
With the opening of this new S-Bahn line, the Lower Elbe , Tempo-Werk and Hausbruch stations on the old northern route were given up.
Since the timetable change in December 2007, the operation of the Hamburg S-Bahn has also been expanded from Neugraben via Buxtehude to Stade . In this newly rebuilt or are dual-system S-Bahn rail cars of series 474.3 used. These run in mixed operation with the regional trains from Start Unterelbe ( metronome until 2018 ) and freight trains and use the AC overhead line on the newly traveled route. In addition, an additional stop was set up in Fischbek .
The Elbbrücken station was retrofitted and went into operation on December 15, 2019.
