11.715 00,000 Beimoor (not in operation)

The U1 line of the Hamburg subway has 47 stations and covers a total of 55.383 kilometers, of which 13.444 kilometers run in the tunnel. It connects Norderstedt via downtown Hamburg with Volksdorf. There the routes branch off towards Ohlstedt and towards Großhansdorf. The average scheduled journey time from Norderstedt Mitte is 76 minutes to Ohlstedt and 84 minutes to Großhansdorf. The U1 is thus the longest underground line in Germany.

The operation is carried out by Hamburger Hochbahn AG on the Norderstedt Mitte - Garstedt section on behalf of Verkehrsgesellschaft Norderstedt (VGN) , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Norderstedt . U-Bahn vehicles of the DT4 series , some of which belong to the VGN, as well as occasional trains of the DT5 series are used .

course

The U1 mostly runs above ground.
Unused final stop "Beimoor" in Großhansdorf

From its starting station in the city of Norderstedt , the U1 line runs through the Hamburg districts of Langenhorn , Fuhlsbüttel , Ohlsdorf , Alsterdorf , Winterhude , Eppendorf , Harvestehude , Rotherbaum , Neustadt , Altstadt , St. Georg , Hohenfelde , Eilbek , Wandsbek , Dulsberg , again Wandsbek, Farmsen-Berne and Volksdorf . Then the line forks: the western branch leads over the municipality of Ammersbek to Ohlstedt . The eastern branch reaches the community of Großhansdorf after crossing the city of Ahrensburg . There are many public facilities such as offices, courts and hospitals, sights and landmarks along the route .

Outside the city center, the U1 runs largely above ground, but completely free of intersections on an independent route, usually in a cut or on a dam. The eastern branch to Großhansdorf is single-track between the Buchenkamp stop and the Großhansdorf terminus over a length of 8.545 km. There are turnouts at the Ahrensburg West , Schmalenbeck and Großhansdorf stops . Behind the sweeping systems of today's Großhandorf terminus, the railway embankment runs 800 m further north to the completed, but (due to lack of development) never opened terminus at Beimoor . The track systems were dismantled after the First World War , the building after the Second World War .

In February 2019, the Hochbahn presented a concept according to which the U1 could be extended from Norderstedt Mitte on the route of the Alsternordbahn to Quickborner Straße. The cost of this extension is estimated at 86 million euros, plus costs of 15 million euros for three additional vehicles.

history

U-Bahn construction at Wandsbeker Markt in the open construction method (1961)

Parts of the route were already in use before the U1 was introduced: Historically, the U1 connects the Walddörferbahn (1918; Barmbek − Großhansdorf) with the Langenhorner Bahn (1918; Ochsenzoll – Ohlsdorf) via the KellJung line (1931; Kellinghusenstraße − Jungfernstieg) .

The first section of today's U1 was built in 1914 Ohlsdorf – Kellinghusenstraße , which was operated as a junction from the then ring line ; The last section was in 1996 on the route of the Alsternordbahn Garstedt-Norderstedt Mitte underground service. For a list of all route construction sections with the opening date, see → Opening dates of the route sections .

Automated operation

Hamburger Hochbahn was the first company in Germany to test automated driving on sections of the U1 line ( project PUSH = process computer-controlled subway automation system Hamburg). The aim was to save costs and improve quality. After attempts with a DT2 vehicle in the 1960s and DT3 units in the 1970s, six DT3 units converted to LZB operation drove from October 31, 1982 to January 8, 1985 on the 10.385 km long route between the Volksdorf and Großhansdorf stations with passengers in shuttle operation. After that, the automated operation in Hamburg was stopped again. Initially, the elevated railway did not plan to reintroduce it. Only the new U5, which is currently being planned, will be operated without a driver. A first section from Bramfeld to City Nord is scheduled to go into operation in 2026 at the earliest. On other railways - such as the Docklands Light Railway in London or the Nuremberg Underground - driverless trains are now used in regular passenger service.

Attractions

The U1 has stops at many sights and tourist attractions in Hamburg. The line runs past the Ohlsdorf cemetery , among other places . Theaters, churches, museums and parks can also be visited. For example, the U1 stops at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus , at St. Katharinen and at the Museum of Art and Industry . Via the Stephansplatz station , passengers can get to the Planten un Blomen park and the Hamburg Congress Center (CCH) .

Important stations

Jungfernstieg

Entrance to the Jungfernstieg U- & S-Bahn station

Jungfernstieg station is an important junction and transfer point in the city's public transport system. The underground connection established in 1958 with the Rathaus underground station south of Mönckebergstraße means that all underground lines and two important S-Bahn lines can be reached there. On March 25, 1931, the first platform of today's four-level station was opened. At that time it was only served by the KellJung line , which is now part of the U1. It is also right in the center of Hamburg's city center , and the Alster pier with the Alster ships can also be reached directly here.

Central Station

Outer Alster in the background

The Hamburg Central Station , which opened on December 9, 1906, is now the busiest passenger station in Germany. With eight mainline tracks, the station is comparatively small.

The main station is important for the connection of the underground to regional and long-distance traffic. All four underground lines serve the main train station - either at Hauptbahnhof Nord (U2 and U4) or Hauptbahnhof Süd (U1 and U3). There are transfer options to all S-Bahn lines, in contrast to the Jungfernstieg, also to those using the connecting line via Dammtor, as well as to national and international long-distance trains .

The main train station is also centrally located. It is located directly in the city center and therefore also offers “shopping tourists” the opportunity to reach their destination quickly.

Wandsbek market

When it opened in 1962, the station designed by Jürgen Elingius and Gottfried Schramm was considered the most modern transfer facility between the underground and buses in Europe and was the model for the underground stations Burgstrasse (opened in 1967) and Billstedt (opened in 1969). The lying above the subway station bus station of Heinz Graaf was designed for each hour 60 buses and 30,000 passengers a day, especially as a central point of the bus from the eastern districts Jenfeld , Tonndorf and Rahlstedt and from the surrounding area. To date, the number has grown to 110 buses per hour and 50,000 passengers, which made it the largest local bus station in Germany. The underground station is used by 40,000 people every day, making it one of the busiest underground stations in Hamburg.

Depot and parking facilities

The extensive facilities of the Farmsen depot, which also includes a parking facility, are located between the Farmsen and Oldenfelde stations. The operating and test track of the Hamburg subway is located between the depot, which is located between the two main tracks, and the Berne station, northwest of the main tracks. The adjustment and acceptance runs take place here. The tests of automated driving in the 1970s and 80s also took place here.

At the other branch of the U1 line there is another large storage facility east of the former Ochsenzoll terminus, with three more sidings to the west of it.

There are smaller parking facilities or sweeping tracks in Norderstedt Mitte (2 south), Garstedt (1 north), Fuhlsbüttel North (1 north, up to the early 1980s 2), Ohlsdorf (2 north), Kellinghusenstrasse (2 south), Stephansplatz (1 north), Wartenau (1 east), Wandsbek Markt (2 north-east, one behind the other), Wandsbek-Gartenstadt (2 east), Farmsen (1 west), Volksdorf (3 south, 2 north), Ohlstedt (5 north) and Großhansdorf (2 north ).

Route control centers

The traffic on the U1 line is controlled from two route control centers. The Ochsenzoll route center is responsible for the route between Norderstedt Mitte and Stephansplatz. The signal boxes at Kellinghusenstrasse and Ohlsdorf are also remote-controlled from Ochsenzoll. The eastern section from Jungfernstieg is controlled from the Farmsen signal box.
