The Berne U-Bahn ( underground) station is an underground station on the U1 line of the Hamburg U-Bahn , which runs here in an incision in the Farmsen-Berne district . The operating abbreviation of the operating company Hamburger Hochbahn is "BE".

Location and traffic

The current station building is based on a design by Horst Sandtmann and was built from 1961 to 1967. In its original form, the upper entrance with its rooms was suspended between four steel arches and shows a glass front to the northwest . Later conversions covered the suspension with a flat roof conversion, and space was created for an additional shop. The pedestrian bridge connects the districts of Farmsen-Berne and Rahlstedt , more precisely the districts of Berne and Oldenfelde .

The station is located 1.2 km from Oldenfelde and 1.7 km from the Meiendorfer Weg station, and is served by the U1 line every 10 minutes during the day. Mondays to Fridays between 6:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and between 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., the train sequence into town is reduced to 5 minutes. On Saturday and Sunday nights, the station is approached every 20 minutes as part of continuous night traffic .

There are stops for nine bus routes in the vicinity of the train station, and two night bus routes also stop here.

The third track is used for test and trial operation of the elevated railway. Out of town, between the end of the platform and the “Fasanenweg” bridge, the three tracks will be connected with switches.

There is a multi-storey car park to the north of the station for park-and-ride traffic.

Barrier-free access

The station has been accessible since January 15, 2015.

At the end of May 2017, a new B + R facility with 750 bicycle parking spaces was put into operation; this is currently the largest facility of its kind at Hamburger Hochbahn.

development

Old station building, design: Eugen Göbel

In 1912, the Hamburg Senate decided to expand the underground ring to the east in order to connect the Hamburg exclaves and to better market the land for settlement. Since Prussian territory was also affected, a state treaty between Hamburg and Prussia was signed and the Walddörferbahn was built by Hamburger Hochbahn on behalf of the Senate.

In Berne, which has belonged to Hamburg since the Middle Ages, a representative station building was built according to plans by Eugen Göbel . Plans for the garden city of Berne and other settlements were tackled as a settlement area. A bridge, which has now been demolished, connected the station building with the central platform and also spanned the freight railway track, for which no stop was provided here. The second track was put into operation in 1923.

A direct station access from Oldenfelde was only created in the 1960s, after a denser settlement had developed here.

Even before the Walddörferbahn was built, there was a small goods train connection between Oldenfelde and Volksdorf . Today's test track between Farmsen and Berne is on the old route. To the west of the Bekassinenau there are loading facilities that are used for building materials.
