The Stephansplatz underground station is a tunnel stop on the Hamburg underground in the Neustadt district . It was opened in 1929 as part of the KellJung line and is now served by the U1 line. The abbreviation for the Hamburger Hochbahn is SN .

Structure and location

The central platform of the subway station is twice lower in a north-west-south-east direction at the eponymous square in Hamburg's Neustadt district. Exits from both ends of the platform initially lead into lobbies in a simple lower position. The northern exit is on the edge of Hamburg ramparts (today Planten un Blomen belonging), also can be from here with about 200 meters walk of Dammtorbahnhof reach. Two stairs lead from the southern vestibule to the surface in the area of the intersection of Esplanade and Dammtorstrasse. In summer 2015, the barrier-free expansion began with the installation of an elevator, the platform elevation and the installation of orientation aids for the visually impaired, which was completed with the commissioning of the elevator on May 30, 2016.

To the north of the platform is a sweeping track that is only used for a few repeater trips and in the event of operational disruptions.

history

The Stephansplatz underground station was designed by Distel & Grubitz and opened on June 2, 1929 as part of the so-called KellJung line between Kellinghusenstraße and Jungfernstieg. Since the Jungfernstieg stop could not be put into operation until 1931, trains ended at Stephansplatz in the first few years. Each platform of the KellJung line was given a specific color code during construction, in which many elements of the station were designed. At Stephansplatz this was the color blue.

The original condition was largely preserved over four decades. It was not until 1972 that the facility was extensively rebuilt, including changing the color scheme of the station. Since then, green and yellow tones have prevailed. In addition, escalators were installed and the swing doors typical of the early elevated railway stations were removed.

Planning for a line U5

Hamburger Hochbahn has been planning another U5 subway line on behalf of the City of Hamburg since 2015 . The U5 is to meet the U1 at Stephansplatz. In a feasibility study published in 2019, several possible variants of implementation were examined. The aim is therefore to completely rebuild the underground station as a four-track transfer station with two platforms in one direction. The trains on both lines in one direction are to stop at a common platform so that passengers can easily change from the U1 to the U5 or vice versa. There are several possible locations for the new building in the area between Planten un Blomen and the Moorweide.

More lines

The stop is also a junction in the Hamburg bus network. There is a connection to the MetroBus lines 4, 5 and 19, to the express bus lines 34 and 36 as well as the city bus line 112. The night bus lines 603, 604 and 605 run during the shutdown of the subway. In addition, it is a short walk from the north exit of the underground station, the Dammtor S and long-distance train station is 200 meters away.
