The Ferrari 158 is a racing car for Formula 1 that Scuderia Ferrari used in 1964 and 1965.

Development history and technology

The construction of the vehicle was new to Ferrari in 1964 , because it was the first Ferrari with a V8 engine and the first with a semi- monocoque , the supporting planking of which was stiffened with tubes in the manner of a lattice frame. The engine had a displacement of 1487 cm³ (bore 67 mm, stroke 52.8 mm), four overhead camshafts ("DOHC") and developed 210 hp (154 kW) at 11,000 rpm. The cylinder banks were offset by 90 degrees. The engine was also load-bearing (the housing was reinforced with a subframe for this purpose) and bolted to the monocoque that came from the Ferrari 156 Aero . This chassis was originally developed for a car with a V8 engine.

The era of the V8 engine only lasted for a short time; the successor model, the Ferrari 1512 with a 12-cylinder 180 ° V-engine , arrived at the end of 1964 . For World Cup 1965 both models were used in parallel, before 1966, the Ferrari 312F1 came.

Racing history

John Surtees won the 1964 German Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix with a 158 and was Formula 1 World Champion at the end of the year thanks to consistently good placements. Lorenzo Bandini won the Grand Prix of Austria on the airfield circuit of Zeltweg and Ferrari won the Constructors' title (constuctors'championship, World Cup, the manufacturer).
