Ferrari 412 CanAm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ferrari 412 CanAm was a CanAm prototype from Ferrari that was used in the North American racing series in 1967.

Development history

The 412 CanAm was the first Ferrari racing car that Scuderia built for the North American racing series. It was created on the initiative of Luigi Chinetti , owner of the North American Racing Team . In addition, the FIA had reduced the displacement of the racing vehicles in the World Sports Car Championship to 3 liters, which reduced Enzo Ferrari's interest in the championship.

Racing history

Chinetti brought a Ferrari 412P - the customer version of the Ferrari 330P4 - back to Maranello to have it converted to the Group 7 regulations of the CanAm series. The V12 engine developed 420 hp, which was not enough against the competition from McLaren and Lola . The car made its debut at the Bridgehampton race with Ludovico Scarfiotti at the wheel, who finished seventh, two laps behind winner Denis Hulme in a McLaren M6A . It was the only racing use of the 412 CanAm.

In 1967 in Maranello two 330P4s were converted to the Can-Am regulations, which the North American Racing Team used as Ferrari 350 CanAm .
