Ferrari 857S

The Ferrari 857S was a racing car that Ferrari built in 1955 and used by Scuderia in sports car races in 1955 and 1956.

Development history

When it turned out during the sports car world championship season in 1955 that the Ferrari 750 Monza had almost no chance against the works cars from Mercedes-Benz, the Scuderia team management decided to build a new racing car. Three bodies were built at Scaglietti . Like the 750 Monza, the 857S had independent suspension on double wishbones with coil springs and lever arm shock absorbers. The 4-cylinder in- line engine was revised and developed 280 hp with a displacement of 3.5 liters.

Racing history

The works cars were rarely used. The greatest successes were the second overall place for Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien at the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires in 1956 and the third overall place for Eugenio Castellotti and Robert Manzon at the Targa Florio 1955 . In the same year, the 857S was replaced by the far more successful 860 Monza .
