The Ferrari F2005 was the 38th Formula 1 race car of the Scuderia Ferrari . It was used in the 2005 Formula 1 World Championship.

technology

The F2005 - project number 656 - was a sporty disappointing construction for Scuderia Ferrari, which could not follow on from the successes of the F2004 . Although the car was based on the previous model, it was largely a new design that was made necessary by the new technical regulations. The F2005 was extremely light - the weight limit for the 2005 season was 605 kg including the fluids and the respective driver. The curb weight of the car was far below this limit without any additional weights to be shifted, which was remarkable because the regulations made stiffeners and reinforcements on the side pods of the monocoque necessary for safety reasons . The coolers in the side pods have been completely redesigned. The aerodynamic aids on the side pods and the engine cover were also new.

The rear end was narrower than the F2004 , which was mainly due to the smaller and lighter sequential gearbox. In this context, the car also required a new underbody and a new rear suspension made of push rods and torsion bar springs.

The V10 engine was load-bearing and installed lengthways. The 055 engine was the last Ferrari 10-cylinder Formula 1 engine to date. An engine had to stay in the vehicle for two race weekends; an engine failure before this deadline was punished with a backward shift of ten places on the starting grid. The F2005 had power-assisted rack and pinion steering and carbon disc brakes all around .

Racing history

The major shortcoming of the F2005 was tire wear, triggered by the rear suspension and Bridgestone tire compounds, which were only used by Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi in 2005 . The FIA had this year tire change during the race - except the change from dry to rain tires - prohibited. The Scuderia had virtually no chance against the Michelin- powered competing teams. With the exception of one race - the San Marino Grand Prix  - the two F2005s almost always suffered from overheated and quickly wearing tires. The two drivers, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello , were also unable to counter this phenomenon.

The F2005 made its racing debut at the third race of the season, the Bahrain Grand Prix . The qualification training was held in 2005 as an individual time trial and distorted the true performance of the vehicles. Michael Schumacher started the race as second in training, but at the end of the race he was more than 50 seconds behind the winner Fernando Alonso in a Renault R25 in fourth . In Imola , the fourth race of the season, everything seemed to be turning out well. Starting from positions nine (Barrichello) and thirteen (Schumacher), the Ferraris were the fastest racing cars on the track from halfway through the distance. The special surface of the racetrack suited the F2005. In the last third of the race, however, Michael Schumacher was unable to pass Alonso in front, despite his car being obviously much faster, and had to admit defeat by 0.215 seconds.

At the Spanish Grand Prix , the tire problems became clear. Michael Schumacher had a puncture on lap 48 and had to retire. Rubens Barrichello was more than one lap behind the winner Kimi Räikkönen in the McLaren MP4-20 and was only ninth. The drivers had the choice of adapting the race pace to the circumstances and thus having no chance or risking tire damage.

At the Canadian Grand Prix , the Scuderia met numerous cancellations, including a. Failures of both Renault with Fernando Alonso and Giancarlo Fisichella. Only 11 of the 20 vehicles that started made it to the finish. Behind Kimi Raikkonen, Schumacher and Barrichello finished on the podium.

There were also unusual circumstances at the US Grand Prix that ultimately resulted in the F2005's only race win. Michelin could not guarantee the safety of the tires, so all vehicles with Michelin tires after the formation lap withdrawn teams from each. With only six racing cars at the start, Schumacher won ahead of Barrichello and Jordan driver Tiago Monteiro .

Another victory was not possible with the F2005. Schumacher achieved second place in Hungary ; at the finish, however, 35 seconds were missing from the winner Kimi Raikkonen.

In the final ranking of the drivers' world championship, Schumacher placed third overall, his team mate Rubens Barrichello finished eighth. In the constructors' championship, the gap was 91 points on the victorious Renault team .
