The Sauber C24 was a Formula 1 , the race car Sauber Motorsport in 2005 in the Formula 1 began World Championship.
Development history and technology
Like the Sauber Formula 1 racing cars of the years before, the C24 was designed by Willy Rampf . The car had very narrow side pods, a completely new rear end and tailpipes integrated into the body. While the transmission was developed by Sauber himself, came as motor back the V10 power unit of Ferrari used.
For Felipe Massa came as second driver Jacques Villeneuve in the team. The 1997 Formula 1 world champion received a two-year contract.
Racing history
The C24 made its racing debut in March 2005 at the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne . In qualifying, Jacques Villeneuve surprised with fourth training place. In the addition of the individual time trials , he was only beaten by Giancarlo Fisichella ( Renault R25 ), Jarno Trulli ( Toyota TF105 ) and Mark Webber ( Williams FW27 ). Felipe Massa did not manage a timed lap and started the race from 18th place on the grid. The race was not so successful; Massa was twelfth and Villeneuve thirteenth.
In the second race of the season, the Malaysian Grand Prix , Villeneuve could not repeat his strong training performance from Melbourne and only reached the 16th qualifying place. He was also slower than teammate Massa, who qualified 14th. In the race, Villeneuve dropped out after a spin and Massa finished tenth, but did not receive any championship points for this placement.
Massa scored the first World Cup points of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix with seventh place. Jacques Villeneuve also had the chance to score points for the drivers' world championship; but the Canadians collided three laps from the end to the Red Bull RB1 of David Coulthard as he tried to dislodge the Scots by an overtaking maneuver from the eighth.
After a convincing fourth place for Villeneuve at the San Marino Grand Prix in Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola , it wasn't until the Canadian Grand Prix that Massa finished a race again in fourth place.
The second half of the season was disappointing for Sauber. The best placings were the sixth places of Villeneuve in Belgium and Massa in the last race of the year in China .
At the constructors' world championship, Sauber finished eighth overall with 20 points.
