The Sauber C36 is the Formula 1 - racing car of Sauber Motorsport for the Formula 1 World Championship 2017 . It is the team's 25th Formula 1 car and was presented in a press release by the team on February 20, 2017.
As with all Sauber vehicles, the name of the car is composed of the C for Christiane, the wife of team founder Peter Sauber , followed by a consecutive number.
Technology and development
Like all Formula 1 vehicles of 2017, the C36 is a rear-wheel drive monoposto with a monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) . In addition to the monocoque, other parts of the vehicle, including body parts and the steering wheel, are made of CFRP. The brake discs are also made from a composite material reinforced with carbon fibers.
The C36 is the successor to the C35 . As the technical regulations changed significantly for the 2017 season, most of the vehicle has been redeveloped. In order to have resources available for this, the further development of the previous model was stopped early.
With a total width of 2000 mm and a width between the front and rear axles of 1600 mm, the vehicle is 200 mm wider than the previous model. The height is unchanged at 950 mm. Completely new are the front wing , which is now 1800 mm wide instead of 1650 mm, the rear wing , the width of which changes from 750 mm to 950 mm and the height of which changes from 950 mm to 800 mm, and the diffuser , which is now 175 mm instead of 125 mm high and 50 mm wider at 1050 mm. To improve the air flow to the rear wing, the car has a noticeable fin on the engine cover.
Is driven from the C36 Ferrari 061 that in middle of the vehicle is mounted, a 1.6-liter V-6 engine of Ferrari with a turbocharger and a 120 kW strong electric motor , so it is a hybrid electric vehicle . The C36 is the only vehicle in the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship to be powered by an engine that is technically the same as the previous season . The team justified this with the fact that when the development of the C36 began at an early stage, the engineers only had reliable values for the engine from the previous year in terms of dimensions, installation, cooling requirements and heat fields of the engine.
The sequential gearbox of the Ferrari car has eight gears. The gear change is triggered by paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle has only two pedals, an accelerator pedal (right) and a brake pedal (left). Just like many other functions, the clutch , which is only used when starting from a standstill, is operated via a lever on the steering wheel.
Unlike the previous model, the C36 is equipped with 305 mm wide front tires and 405 mm wide rear tires from the standard supplier Pirelli , which are mounted on 13-inch wheels from OZ Racing . This means that the tires on the front axle and 80 mm on the rear axle are 60 mm wider than in the previous season. This also required the development of new wheel suspensions for the C36. The brake discs are made of silicon carbide ceramic reinforced with carbon fibers .
Like all Formula 1 vehicles since 2011 , the C36 has a Drag Reduction System (DRS), which reduces the drag of the vehicle on the straights by flattening part of the rear wing , if it is allowed to be used. The DRS is also activated with a switch on the steering wheel of the car.
Painting and sponsorship
The C36 is mainly painted in blue, there are also golden color accents. Large parts of the side pods, the side area of the monocoque and parts of the rear wing are painted white.
It advertise CNBC , Edox , Pirelli and Silanna on the vehicle, but only with small lettering; large parts of the car, including the white areas, are completely unlabeled. In addition, there are stickers of Switzerland on the rear wing as well as on the engine cover and in front of the cockpit golden 25 years lettering on the occasion of the 25th season of the Sauber racing team in the Formula 1 World Championship.
driver
In the 2017 season, Sauber competes with drivers Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein . Ericsson is already in his third season for the team, Wehrlein is switching from the insolvent Manor team to Sauber.
Since Wehrlein sustained a back injury in an accident at the Race of Champions before the season started , Antonio Giovinazzi instead competed in the first two races of the season.
