Changes in 2017
Racetracks
The Grand Prix of Germany accounted for, as 2015 . The race on the Baku City Circuit was no longer held as a European Grand Prix in 2017 , but as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix .
Technical regulations
After drivers, officials and spectators had criticized the Formula 1 vehicles in recent years as "unspectacular", the strategy group decided in 2015 to counter this impression, which was also created by the newly introduced V6 hybrid drives and their lower volume compared to earlier engines was. The goal was announced that the vehicles should be five to six seconds faster per lap from 2017. This should be made possible by wider tires, a lower vehicle weight and new specifications for the aerodynamics of the vehicles. An increase in engine output to more than 735 kW (1000 hp) was also discussed. Ferrari even suggested switching to V8 biturbo engines, but this was rejected. For reasons of cost, it was decided to keep the engine rules introduced in 2014 . However, several responsible persons also expressed safety concerns about the significantly faster vehicles.
After long discussions, it was agreed to increase the overall width of the cars to 2,000 mm; between the front and rear axles, the vehicles could now be a maximum of 1,600 mm wide. Contrary to the initial plans, the minimum weight should increase to 722 kg. Because of the larger and therefore heavier wheels, the minimum weight increased by a further six kilograms to 728 kg. The front and rear wings as well as the diffuser have also become significantly larger compared to the previous season. In addition, the amount of fuel allowed in the race was increased from 100 to 105 kg. The new rules were criticized from several sides, it was feared that overtaking would become much more difficult due to the higher downforce of the racing cars and the higher cornering speeds. This was confirmed at the first race of the season in Australia , where there were only five overtaking maneuvers in the entire race.
The FIA responded at the Spanish Grand Prix and made an adjustment to the DRS zone for the first time in several years. The activation point of the DRS zone on the start-finish straight of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been moved 100 meters forward and the DRS zone has been enlarged.
The introduction of larger diameter wheels and low-profile tires for the 2017 season was discussed as early as 2014 and the first test drives with 18-inch wheels were also undertaken. However, those responsible decided to continue using 13-inch wheels. Instead, the tire width has been changed: the width of the front tires increases from 245 to 305 mm, that of the rear wheels from 325 to 405 mm. Since the wheels became significantly heavier due to the larger tire width, the Kevlar cables, which prevented a wheel from being torn off the vehicle after a suspension break, had to be able to absorb eight kilojoules of energy instead of six kilojoules .
Since the teams had to place the orders for the various tire compounds for the first five races before the first test drives of the season, Pirelli specified the number of compounds: each driver received two sets of the hardest, four sets of the medium and seven sets of the softest tire compound for the respective race weekend.
The high costs of the hybrid drives ensured that the FIA launched a tender for an alternative engine from an independent manufacturer. It was supposed to be a V6 twin-turbo engine with a displacement of 2.2 liters, which had no hybrid system and was to be made available to all teams at low cost. In addition, in the run-up to the 2016 Formula 1 World Championship , Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso did not have a contract with any of the engine suppliers for a long time and threatened to withdraw from the Formula 1 World Championship. After AER , Ilmor , Mecachrome and another, undisclosed company applied to develop the alternative engine , the idea was dropped. Instead, the four engine manufacturers reduced the costs for the drives for the 2017 season by one million euros and committed to supplying all teams with engines. In addition, the token system was abolished, the further development of the engines was completely released again.
The reintroduction of refueling stops during the race was also discussed. However, this was refused.
Sporting regulations
If the race started behind the safety car , there was now a standing start at the end of the safety car phase.
If the race is interrupted, it should no longer be possible to work on the vehicles or change the tires. However, this announced change was not implemented in the regulations.
If several identical elements of the drive unit were exchanged on a vehicle on a racing weekend, the exchange of which resulted in a penalty, only the last changed part was considered to be usable without penalty. So it was no longer possible to exchange a part "in reserve" several times on the same race weekend and only receive a single penalty in order to be able to use these parts with impunity in the following races.
A driver still had to use a fundamentally identical helmet design throughout the season. However, each driver was allowed to use a helmet with a special paint finish in a race of his choice. Should a driver change teams during the season, he was also allowed to change the helmet design.
In addition, appendices 6 and 8 of the sporting regulations have been changed. There were clarifications here with the so-called "listed parts" that a team was allowed to buy from another team, and clearer rules were set up with regard to wind tunnel tests and the transfer of personnel between the teams.
If it should not be clear to the race stewards whether a driver is solely or largely responsible for an incident, no more punishment was imposed. In the past, an investigation was started after the race in which the drivers involved were questioned by the race stewards.
After the first three races of the season, it was decided that Articles 9.2 and 9.3 of the sporting regulations, which related to the start number and the placement of the driver's name and the name or brand of the vehicle, would be implemented more restrictively from the Spanish Grand Prix . The start number now had to be represented with numbers at least 230 mm in size. The driver's name could also be abbreviated to the three-digit abbreviation of the TV broadcasts and had to consist of at least 150 mm large letters. The start number and name had to stand out in color from the ground and be "clearly recognizable". The brand or name of the vehicle had to be shown on the nose and be at least 25 mm tall.
Engine suppliers
After a year with engines from Ferrari from the previous year , Scuderia Toro Rosso was again supplied by Renault with engines of the current expansion stage. Unlike the sister team Red Bull Racing , the engine was used at Toro Rosso under the name Renault, the team looked unsuccessfully for a name sponsor.
In 2017, Sauber no longer competed with the current ones, but for the first time since the introduction of the 1.6-liter turbo engines with previous year's engines from Ferrari. This was justified by the fact that the Sauber engineers only had reliable values for the unit from the previous year in terms of dimensions, installation, cooling requirements and heat fields of the engine for the development of the new vehicle.
Renault developed a completely new drive unit for the 2017 season. Honda also announced at the beginning of 2017 that the new engine was not a further development, but a new development with a changed architecture and completely revised positioning of the components. As the previously used drive unit offered little potential for improvement and was technically largely exhausted, a concept change was necessary , according to Honda engine boss Yusuke Hasegawa .
driver
Nico Rosberg , who won the Formula 1 World Championship with Mercedes in 2016, announced the end of his Formula 1 career after the 2016 season. His successor was Valtteri Bottas , who had already announced his contract extension at Williams in November 2016 and had to buy the Mercedes out of his contract.
Felipe Massa announced in September 2016 that he would end his career in the Formula 1 World Championship after the 2016 season. His place at Williams was taken over by Lance Stroll , who won the European Formula 3 Championship with the Prema Powerteam in 2016 and was a test driver at Williams. After Bottas moved to Mercedes, Massa decided to continue his career and contest the 2017 season for Williams again.
McLaren driver Jenson Button also ended his career as a regular driver in the Formula 1 World Championship, his successor being the previous test and reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne , who competed in the Super Formula in 2016 and replaced the injured Fernando Alonso at the Bahrain Grand Prix . Button stayed with the team as a consultant and took care of the development of the McLaren racing cars, and he was the team's substitute driver. Therefore, it was used at the Monaco Grand Prix when it replaced Fernando Alonso, who competed in the Indianapolis 500 that same weekend .
Despite a valid contract for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship, Nico Hülkenberg moved from Force India to Renault . He replaced Kevin Magnussen , who moved to Haas . Hülkenberg's successor at Force India was Esteban Ocon , who drove for Manor in 2016 . Pascal Wehrlein moved to Sauber after a season at Manor , where he replaced Felipe Nasr .
Antonio Giovinazzi made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix as a substitute for Wehrlein at Sauber, who did not feel fit enough before the season after recovering from a back injury. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Paul di Resta replaced Felipe Massa, who was suffering from a viral disease, shortly after the third free practice session.
Pierre Gasly made his debut at the Malaysian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso in the Formula 1 World Championship, replacing Daniil Kwjat . Jolyon Palmer announced at the Japanese Grand Prix that he would be contesting his last race for Renault there. His place took from the US Grand Prix Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz jr. one, which in turn was replaced by Kvjat, who thus initially suspended two races. Since Gasly for his part skipped the US Grand Prix because of the season finale of the Super Formula , Brendon Hartley made his debut in the Formula 1 World Championship there. For the remainder of the season, Gasly returned to the cockpit and again replaced Kvjat.
Teams
In May 2015, the FIA opened an application process for new teams interested in entering the Formula 1 World Championship. Two teams applied but were rejected by the FIA.
Just Racing Services Ltd. , the parent company of Manor Racing , initially filed for bankruptcy on January 6, 2017 . Once a buyer is found, the associated insolvency on 27 January 2017, the liquidation of the company. This reduced the number of teams in the Formula 1 World Championship to ten.
Teams and drivers
The overview lists all drivers who had signed a contract with the racing team as regular, test or substitute drivers for the 2017 season. The teams are arranged according to the constructors' championship of the previous year.
Season preparation
Pirelli test drives for the 2017 season
A total of 26 test days took place from August 2016 to February 2017, during which the tires for 2017 were tested. Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull each provided Pirelli with a modified vehicle from the 2015 season with which the higher downforce values of the new racing cars were to be simulated. In addition, the wheel suspensions have also been adapted for the wider and therefore heavier wheels. In order not to provide any advantages for the teams carrying out the tests, all data from the tests were made available to all teams.
February 27–2. March: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The first week of testing took place from February 27th to March 2nd at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein had to skip the test drives because of a compression of his cervical spine in an accident during the Race of Champions , Ferrari replacement driver Antonio Giovinazzi drove in his place .
All ten new cars made their track debuts in this test. At the start of the test on February 27, Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes was the fastest with a lap time of 1: 21.765 minutes, followed by Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa in the Williams . On the first day of the test drives, Hamilton was one second faster than the best time in the 2016 tests, which Kimi Raikkonen had achieved in 1: 22.765 minutes. On that day, Vettel covered almost 600 kilometers with 128 laps, making him the driver with the greatest distance, followed by Massa and Valtteri Bottas with 103 and 79 laps respectively. Mercedes drove even more with 152 laps covered, but here Bottas (morning) and Hamilton (afternoon) alternated. Fernando Alonso drove the shortest distance of 29 laps because of an oil leak in his McLaren that made it necessary to change the engine. Even Sergio Perez drove in his Force India due to a defective exhaust only 39 rounds.
On February 28, Raikkonen set the fastest time in 1: 20.960 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the Red Bull . Haas driver Kevin Magnussen drove the longest distance with 118 laps, ahead of Räikkönen (108 laps) and Bottas (102 laps), who was also the first driver to carry out a full race simulation. At Mercedes, both drivers took turns again and with 168 laps drove significantly more than all other teams. Lance Stroll in the Williams only drove twelve laps because he damaged his vehicle while turning and the team had no spare parts in stock to repair. At McLaren there were again technical problems that made it necessary to change the engine, so Stoffel Vandoorne only drove 40 laps.
Bottas set the fastest time on March 1, 2017 with a lap time of 1: 19.705 minutes ahead of Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull. With 139 laps, Vettel was again the driver with the longest distance ahead of Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson and Stroll. On this day, too, both drivers took turns at Mercedes and drove the longest distance of all teams with 170 laps. Even Daniil Kwjat and Carlos Sainz jr. took turns at Toro Rosso , but only covered 31 and 32 laps respectively. Haas was the only team to cover an even shorter distance, Romain Grosjean only drove 56 laps. Stroll hit the tire wall with his vehicle in the afternoon, damaging the front wing, nose and suspension of his Williams. On that day, the test drives were over for him.
On March 2nd, Raikkonen set the fastest time in 1: 20.872 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Jolyon Palmer in the Renault . The track was artificially watered in the morning and during the hour-long lunch break so that the teams could test the new Pirelli rain tires. Grosjean drove the longest distance from Raikkonen and Verstappen with 118 laps. Williams was unable to take part in the test drives because the damage to the chassis from the Stroll accident the day before was too great. Hamilton also didn't drive that day due to technical problems. Kwjat only drove one installation lap and then parked his vehicle with a fault in the drive train, and Sainz's scheduled afternoon deployment had to be omitted.
7-10 March: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The second week of testing took place from March 7th to 10th, also at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain.
On March 7th, Massa set the fastest time in 1: 19.726 minutes ahead of Ricciardo and Vettel. Massa and Vettel drove the longest distance with 168 laps each, followed by Esteban Ocon with 142 laps. At Renault, where Palmer and Nico Hülkenberg took turns, and at McLaren, the drive unit had to be changed, but the teams still covered 73 and 80 laps respectively.
On March 8th, Bottas was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.310 minutes ahead of Massa and Raikkonen. Despite an engine change, Verstappen drove the longest distance ahead of Pérez (100 laps) and Grosjean (96 laps) with 102 laps. At Mercedes, both drivers took turns on that day and with 149 laps drove significantly more than all other teams. Palmer drove the shortest distance with 29 laps, and Alonso (46) and Räikkönen (53) also covered a comparatively few laps. At Alonso, the energy storage had to be replaced, Raikkonen turned and hit the barrier. The repair of the vehicle took too long, so that Raikkonen could no longer drive afterwards.
On March 9, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 19.024 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ocon. With 155 laps covered, Vettel was also ahead in the distance classification, followed by Ocon and Ricciardo with 137 and 128 laps respectively. Williams and Mercedes changed drivers again at midday and achieved 164 and 147 laps with both drivers. At McLaren (48 laps) and Renault (53 laps) there were again technical problems that made another engine change necessary.
On March 10th, Raikkonen set the fastest lap in 1: 18.634 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Sainz. He undercut the best time from the previous year, which he set himself, by more than four seconds. In addition, it was only 0.3 seconds slower than the 1: 18.339, which Felipe Massa drove on April 14, 2008, also in a Ferrari, as an absolute lap record on this track configuration. Sainz and Stroll drove the longest distance with 132 laps each, ahead of Pérez with 128 laps. As in the previous days, there were again technical problems at McLaren, so that the team drove the shortest distance by far with 43 laps.
Racing calendar
The provisional racing calendar, which included 21 races, was approved by the FIA World Council on September 28, 2016. On November 24, 2016, a revised version of the racing calendar with only 20 races was published, which was decided by the FIA World Council on November 30, 2016 in a slightly different form. The German Grand Prix has been removed from the racing calendar here. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has also been postponed to prevent a date collision with the Le Mans 24-hour race .
