After the Australian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with seven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and ten points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 28 points and Williams with 29 points .

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white), P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

At McLaren , Stoffel Vandoorne made his Formula 1 World Championship debut. He replaced Fernando Alonso , who was not allowed to start by the FIA due to injuries in the chest area that he sustained in an accident at the Australian Grand Prix .

The DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year, the measuring point for the first zone was ten meters before curve 9, the zone itself began at the beginning of the back straight, exactly 50 meters after curve 10. The measuring point for the second DRS zone was 108 meters before turn 14, the DRS was allowed to be activated on the start-finish straight, 270 meters after turn 15. There were also no structural changes to the route.

Max Verstappen (eight), Marcus Ericsson (four), Kimi Räikkönen , Vettel (three each), Valtteri Bottas , Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto , Nico Hülkenberg , Daniil Kwjat and Felipe Nasr (two each) went with penalty points into the race weekend.

With Felipe Massa , Vettel, Hamilton (twice each) and Button (once) four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Mazen Al Hilli (BAH), Roger Peart (CAN) and Derek Warwick (GBR) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 32.294 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen.

In the second free practice, Rosberg again set the fastest time in 1: 31.001 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Button. Grosjean lost part of his trowel after driving over the curbs . He had a similar incident during the pre-season test drives in Barcelona. Vettel parked his Ferrari with a defect in the suspension around 15 minutes before the end of the training session at the edge of the track. Due to a misunderstanding, Kevin Magnussen ignored the request of the race management to have his vehicle weighed. So he had to start the race from the pit lane.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 31.683 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Rosberg.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1) the drivers had 16 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The first pilot was eliminated after seven minutes, then another every 90 seconds until there were 15 pilots left at the end of the segment. Rosberg was the fastest. The Sauber, Manor and Renault drivers and Pérez were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The eight fastest drivers qualified for the third part of qualifying. The first pilot was eliminated after six minutes, then another one every 90 seconds. Hamilton was fastest. Kwjat, the McLaren, the Haas and both Toro Rosso drivers were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted 14 minutes, during which the first eight starting positions were awarded. The first driver retired after five minutes, and another one every 90 seconds. In the last minutes of the third section, the track remained empty again, as all drivers had used up the tire sets available to them. Hamilton drove the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Vettel. It was the fifty-first pole position for Hamilton.

run

Immediately after the start, Rosberg is in the lead, Bottas attacks Hamilton in the first corner
After touching Bottas, Hamilton almost lost control of his vehicle, Ricciardo collided with Bottas and damaged his front wing
Second lap: Pérez hits Sainz and damages his front wing

There were already two failures in the warm-up lap: Vettel parked his Ferrari at the edge of the track with an engine failure, and Jolyon Palmer drove into the pit lane with a hydraulic fault, where he got out of the vehicle.

Rosberg started well and took the lead, after which there was a collision between Hamilton and the very well started Bottas. Hamilton fell back to ninth place, the front wing and underbody of his vehicle were damaged in the accident. After the race it turned out that the gearbox was also damaged. Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo , who was driving directly behind him, also suffered damage to their front wings, but continued to drive. There was also a collision behind this, Hülkenberg drove into Grosjean and therefore had to have a new nose fitted at the end of the first lap.

On the second lap, when braking into the first corner, Pérez attacked Carlos Sainz Jr. to a touch, Pérez also damaged the front wing and had to change it at the end of the lap. Sainz suffered a puncture and fell far behind as he first had to drive slowly the entire lap. Meanwhile, Hamilton overtook several drivers and worked his way up to sixth place.

At this point, Rosberg was leading in front of Felipe Massa , Bottas, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Hamilton, Grosjean and Verstappen. On the fifth lap, Raikkonen overtook Ricciardo, who had already pitted to change tires at the end of this lap after braking . Raikkonen then also passed Bottas. Button rolled out with a defect in the ERS at the edge of the track.

On the eighth lap, Hamilton also overtook Bottas, who pitted shortly after to change tires. One lap later, Hamilton lost a part of its underbody that had come loose in the accident on the first lap. Romain Grosjean , now driving behind him , ran over the part, but did not suffer any damage to his car. On the same lap, Bottas was given a drive-through penalty because the race stewards blamed him for the collision with Hamilton on the first lap. At this point, Esteban Gutiérrez gave up the race with a brake defect.

On the eleventh lap, Verstappen pitted to change tires, one lap later Grosjean, who stayed ahead of Verstappen. Both decided again for the Supersoft . Vandoorne meanwhile passed both Force India pilots.

In the 13th lap, Raikkonen came to the pits and switched to the soft tires. He came back onto the track just behind Ricciardo and Massa, but overtook both of them within one lap. One lap later, Rosberg and Hamilton also pitted, Rosberg also switched to soft , Hamilton to medium . Raikkonen overtook Kwjat and drove the fastest lap of the race to date. One lap later, Hamilton also overtook Massa and then Kwjat.

At this point Rosberg was leading ahead of Raikkonen, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Kwjat, Massa, Grosjean and Verstappen. On lap 17 there were two more overtaking maneuvers: Hamilton overtook Ricciardo and Grosjean Massa. Kvjat pitted to change tires. Verstappen also passed Massa shortly afterwards.

In the midfield there was a group of drivers battling for tenth place: Ericsson, Felipe Nasr , Pascal Wehrlein and Kwjat, who caught up a lot after his pit stop and left all three other drivers behind within two laps and was thus in tenth place .

On lap 24 Grosjean overtook Ricciardo, who immediately went to change tires and was then behind Kwjat, Ericsson and Bottas, but overtook all three again.

Raikkonen and Hamilton went to the pits to change tires, and both had Supersoft fitted again , just like Grosjean a lap later. Ricciardo drove the fastest lap of the race to date and passed Massa. Grosjean and Verstappen both overtook Bottas. Both Williams drivers were using medium tires at this point and could not keep up with the lap times of the other drivers in the top 10. Nevertheless, Massa switched again to one set of the medium in lap 30 .

The front runner Rosberg switched back to Supersoft , just like his immediate pursuers Raikkonen and Hamilton . Hamilton drove the fastest lap of the race to date and reduced the gap to Raikkonen. Sainz gave up the race with a technical defect in the pits. Grosjean meanwhile overtook Kvjat.

On lap 38 Raikkonen came to the last scheduled pit stop and switched to soft . Two laps later, Rosberg, Hamilton and Grosjean also pitted, all with the same choice of tires. After his pit stop, Rosberg drove the fastest lap of the race and was able to further increase the gap to Raikkonen. Red Bull decided to use a different tactic, Ricciardo switched to Medium on lap 43 and his team-mate Kwjat to Supersoft on lap 45 .

Grosjean caught up with Massa with his fresher tires and overtook him on lap 46. Shortly afterwards, Verstappen pitted for the last tire change, so that all drivers in the top ten had made their tire changes. At this point the Williams drivers again drove significantly slower lap times than the other drivers in the points, Kwjat overtook Bottas on lap 50, Verstappen on lap 52 Massa. Then Verstappen caught up with Grosjean, who however saved a narrow lead at the finish. Kwjat overtook Massa on the last lap and thus took seventh place.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton. It was the second win of the season in the second race for Rosberg. Across the seasons it was the fifth win in a row for Rosberg and the eighth win for a Mercedes driver. Raikkonen achieved his first podium since the 2015 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , it was already his eighth podium at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which he has never won. The other points were placed by Ricciardo, Grosjean, Verstappen, Kwjat, Massa, Bottas and Vandoorne. Vandoorne thus reached the first point in his first Grand Prix.

In the drivers' championship, Rosberg extended his lead over Hamilton, Ricciardo was now in third place. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was now clearly ahead of Ferrari, while Red Bull was the new third.
