After the Russian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 43 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 57 points ahead of Kimi Raikkonen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 81 points and Red Bull with 100 points .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange), P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Compared to the previous year, there were only marginal changes to the race track: The curbs were renewed, and the drainage system in almost half of the curves was revised.

The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The measuring point for the first zone was 86 meters in front of the Campsa , the zone began 40 meters after the curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight, was the safety car line, the DRS was then allowed to be activated 157 meters after the New Holland .

Before the Grand Prix, Red Bull announced that Daniil Kwjat and Max Verstappen will swap cockpits with immediate effect.

Verstappen (eight), Kwjat (five), Marcus Ericsson , Nico Hülkenberg (four each), Räikkönen, Sebastian Vettel (three each), Fernando Alonso , Valtteri Bottas , Esteban Gutiérrez , Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Rio Haryanto and Felipe Nasr (each two) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Raikkonen, Alonso (twice each), Felipe Massa , Jenson Button , Vettel, Hamilton and Rosberg (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

David Domingo (ESP), Martin Donnelly (GBR), Tim Mayer (USA) and Radovan Novak (CZE) acted as race commissioners .

Before the race, it was announced that the two Ferrari customer teams Haas and Sauber also received the enhanced version of the Ferrari 059/5 at this Grand Prix , which the works team had been using since the race in Russia.

training

In the first free practice, Vettel was fastest with a lap time of 1: 23.951 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Rosberg.

In the second free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 23.922 seconds, ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton. The training had to be interrupted after a puncture at Jolyon Palmer .

Also in the third free practice session, Rosberg was fastest with a lap time of 1: 23.078 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. The Manor and Sauber drivers, Massa and Palmer were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. The Haas pilots, Kevin Magnussen , Kwjat, Button and Hulkenberg were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo . It was the 52nd pole position for Hamilton.

run

Hamilton initially stayed in front at the start, but Rosberg passed on the outside when braking into the first corner. Behind them were Ricciardo, Vettel, who had also started well, Max Verstappen , Carlos Sainz jr. , Valtteri Bottas and Raikkonen. Hamilton came out of the long third corner with more momentum and sat down on the inside next to Rosberg. This drove further and further inwards to defend his position. Hamilton didn't give in and hit the grass next to the track, losing control of his vehicle, spinning and crashing into Rosberg's car. Both vehicles slipped into the Repsol gravel bed , and both drivers were eliminated. It was the first failure of both Mercedes drivers since the 2011 Australian Grand Prix . After questioning the two drivers after the race, the stewards decided that it was a racing accident and did not issue any penalties.

Behind the now leading Ricciardo, Verstappen and Sainz overtook in front of Repsol Vettel, behind which the badly started Raikkonen passed Bottas again. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicles . Ricciardo was leading in front of his team-mate Verstappen, followed by Sainz, Vettel, Räikkönen, Bottas, Sergio Pérez , Button, Alonso and Romain Grosjean .

The race was released again at the end of the third lap, the positions initially remained unchanged. Sainz couldn't keep up with the other drivers at the front for long and had to let Vettel pass on the eighth lap and Raikkonen on the tenth lap. On the eleventh lap, Sainz, Button and Hülkenberg pitted for the first tire change. Ricciardo and Alonso stopped one lap later, and Verstappen and Raikkonen another lap later. Vettel was leading ahead of Grosjean, who was overtaken by Ricciardo on the same lap. On lap 15, Vettel and Grosjean also changed tires, so that all drivers had completed their first pit stop. With the exception of Grosjean, who again chose the soft compound, all the pilots in the front field were on medium tires.

As a result, the field at the front pushed closer together, Verstappen, Vettel and Räikkönen caught up with Ricciardo. However, there were no attacks. Meanwhile, Hülkenberg had to park his burning vehicle at the edge of the track on the 22nd lap.

On the 28th lap, the front runner Ricciardo pitted for the second tire change, one lap later Vettel also stopped. Both switched to the soft mix. As a result, both of them, in third and fourth place, drove the fastest laps of the race to date. Verstappen changed tires on lap 34 and chose the medium compound, a lap later Raikkonen and Pérez, who was in seventh place, did exactly the same. In the meantime, the Renault drivers were the only drivers in the field to switch to the hardest tire compound, Hard .

In the 37th lap, Vettel pitted for the third time and switched back to medium . Ricciardo was in front of Verstappen, Raikkonen, Vettel, Bottas and Sainz, who switched to Medium one lap later and dropped to eighth place. Another lap later, Bottas changed tires, but stayed in fifth place. Grosjean also changed the tires, but also had a new front wing fitted.

On the 43rd lap Ricciardo changed tires for the third time, and he too wanted to finish the race with the medium tires. Verstappen was leading around two seconds ahead of Raikkonen, Vettel was around six seconds behind, Ricciardo was another six seconds behind. Behind them were Bottas, Sainz, Pérez, Gutiérrez, Kwjat and Massa, which were clearly behind. Meanwhile, Alonso parked his McLaren on the side of the track with a technical defect. In the following laps, Raikkonen shortened the gap to Verstappen, and Ricciardo also caught up with Vettel. Kwjat switched to the soft mixture again in the 51st lap and fell out of the points. He drove the fastest lap of the race on lap 53 and passed Gutiérrez shortly afterwards.

Ricciardo put Vettel under pressure and passed in the 59th lap when braking into the first corner, but he braked himself so that Vettel was able to counter and took third place again. Grosjean parked his vehicle with braking problems. Although he was constantly in the DRS window, Raikkonen failed to launch an attack on Verstappen. Ricciardo continued to put Vettel under pressure, but suffered a tire damage on the left rear on lap 65. He then went to the pits to change tires and came back on the track shortly before Bottas.

Shortly before the end of the race, the two Renault drivers collided. Magnussen received a ten-second penalty for causing the collision, which dropped him from 14th to 15th place, as well as two penalty points.

Verstappen won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel. It was the first win and also the first podium for Verstappen, and it was also the first success at a Grand Prix for a Dutch driver. Verstappen also became the youngest Grand Prix winner in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship. It was the first win for Red Bull since the Belgian Grand Prix in 2014 , when both Mercedes drivers collided in the early stages of the race. The remaining points were placed by Ricciardo, Bottas, Sainz, Pérez, Massa, Button and Kwjat.

Rosberg remained in the lead in the overall standings, Raikkonen was new second ahead of Hamilton. The first three positions for the designers remained unchanged.
