The 1993 Spanish Grand Prix took place on May 9 in Montmeló north of Barcelona and was the fifth race of the 1993 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The same field of participants that had contested the San Marino Grand Prix two weeks earlier also competed in the fifth round of the World Championship in Spain.

training

The two Williams drivers Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified for the front row ahead of Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher . Riccardo Patrese and Karl Wendlinger formed the third row in front of Michael Andretti and Jean Alesi .

run

Johnny Herbert missed the start of the warm-up lap and had to start the race from last place. Although the traffic light system did not work properly and instead of the green light signal that was common at the time, it signaled a yellow flashing light, all pilots completed the start without any problems, which is why it was not canceled. Hill initially took the lead ahead of Prost, Senna, Schumacher, Patrese, Andretti and Alesi. In the eleventh lap, Prost took over the top position from his team-mate.

After Prost had initially gained a lead, he slowed down towards the end of the race due to handling problems, so that Hill was able to catch up with him again, but retired on lap 41 with an engine failure. Prost won ahead of Senna, Schumacher and Patrese. Michael Andretti scored the first World Championship points of his Formula 1 career in fifth. Gerhard Berger finished sixth.
