After the Brazilian Grand Prix , Ayrton Senna led the drivers' standings with 6 points ahead of Alain Prost and 10 points ahead of Damon Hill . Williams-Renault was tied in the constructors' championship with McLaren-Ford and 10 points ahead of Ligier-Renault .

At Jordan-Hart , Ivan Capelli was replaced by Thierry Boutsen .

With Prost (once), a former winner entered this Grand Prix, which was held again for the first time since 1985 .

training

In free practice on Thursday, Prost achieved the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Hill and Gerhard Berger . In the second free practice session on Friday, Senna took the top position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Prost. During free practice on Saturday, the Williams drivers again led the way with Prost ahead of Hill. Senna was third.

Qualifying

In qualifying on Friday, which took place on a wet track, Senna set the fastest lap ahead of Hill and Prost. In qualifying on Saturday, the fastest times in qualifying were driven due to dry conditions. Prost secured pole position in front of Hill and Schumacher.

Warm up

In the warm up, Hill set the fastest lap ahead of JJ Lehto and Senna.

run

The 1993 European Grand Prix started with a turbulent first lap on a wet track. While the Williams kept their positions at the start, Schumacher and Senna hindered each other so that Karl Wendlinger could take third position. However, Senna was able to counter and overtook Schumacher and then Wendlinger. While Schumacher also passed Wendlinger, Michael Andretti and Wendlinger collided . Meanwhile, Senna overtook Hill and took the lead from Prost before the end of the first lap. Senna's compatriot Rubens Barrichello also started well and improved from twelfth to fourth position within the first lap.

After Martin Brundle was eliminated after a spin and Ukyō Katayama had to give up with a clutch damage, the track dried out and most of the pilots switched to dry tires. JJ Lehto retired in fifth place with handling problems. Berger, who had taken over the position, had to give up a little later with a damaged suspension. As Mark Blundell spun off the track, it started raining again. With the exception of Schumacher, the pilots at the front pitted. For a short time he took over the lead, but he turned and retired. While Philippe Alliot had to retire after an accident, Aguri Suzuki and Andrea de Cesaris retired with a gearbox problem and Jean Alesi with a damage to the hydraulic pump.

After it got drier again, the pilots came back to the pits to change. With Senna losing 20 seconds due to a problem, Prost took the lead ahead of Senna, Hill, Barrichello, Derek Warwick and Johnny Herbert . A short time later it started raining again. This time Senna decided not to stop and took the lead as both Williams pits. It was the right decision for the McLaren driver as the track soon dried up again. The Williams drivers had to switch back to dry tires. In the process, Prost's engine died in the pits and he came back on track in fourth place. He was lapped by Senna. Barrichello was initially in second place ahead of Hill, but after it started raining again and the drivers had to change their tires, he fell back to third place behind Hill and was also lapped.

After Boutsen retired with a jammed accelerator cable and Warwick with a gearbox failure, Barrichello also retired six laps before the end with a loss of fuel pressure and thus missed his first podium in his third Formula 1 race.

Senna won the race in a dominant way. Only Hill in second place, who was more than a minute behind the McLaren driver, was unable to lap it. Prost was third, one lap behind. Herbert was also only one lap behind, who, in contrast to all the other drivers who were placed in front, only pitted once and finally finished fourth. The remaining points went to Riccardo Patrese and Fabrizio Barbazza , who scored his first point on his first finish in Formula 1.

Senna set the fastest lap on lap 57 by driving through the pit lane and not stopping to change tires. This was possible because there was no speed limit in the pit lane in 1993 and the Donington pit lane is a shortcut to the route.

Senna increased his lead in the drivers' world championship. His team, McLaren-Ford, took the lead in the Williams-Renault constructors' championship.

At the 1993 European Grand Prix, a new record of pit stops was set with 64 pit stops. This number was only exceeded at the Chinese Grand Prix 2010 in Shanghai with 67 pit stops.
