With Michael Schumacher (six times), Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso (twice each) and Felipe Massa (once), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The European Grand Prix was held for the 20th time in 2010.
training
In the first free practice, Nico Rosberg took first place in front of the McLaren drivers Hamilton and Button. Paul di Resta took over in this training the Force India -cockpit of Adrian Sutil and Christian Klien was allowed in the HRT of Karun Chandhok train. In the second free practice session, local hero Alonso took the lead in front of the two Red Bull-Renaults of Sebastian Vettel and Webber.
In the third free practice session on Saturday, Vettel posted the fastest lap ahead of Robert Kubica and Webber.
Qualifying
Kubica posted the best time in the first section of qualifying. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. In the second segment of the qualification, Vettel took the lead. The Toro Rosso , Mercedes and Force India pilots as well as Pedro de la Rosa did not make the jump to the last section. In this Vettel kept the leading position and secured the pole position in front of Webber and Hamilton.
The Williams drivers, who both qualified for the final section of qualifying, drove the same lap time to within a thousandth of a second. Since Nico Hülkenberg set the time first, he started eighth ahead of Rubens Barrichello .
run
At the start of the European Grand Prix there was a duel between Vettel and Hamilton. After a contact caused by Hamilton, Vettel kept the lead. His team-mate Webber didn't get off to a good start and fell back to ninth place. While Vettel took the lead, Webber decided to do his mandatory pit stop in the seventh lap in order to be in a good starting position during a safety car phase.
After Rosberg had also decided on this strategy, a safety car phase actually took place: Webber tried to pass Heikki Kovalainen before Turn 12 . He drove so close that he touched the Kovalainen driving ahead and lifted his car, overturned and hit the barrier. Webber was unharmed and got out of the car unaided. The morning before the race there had already been an accident in the same place in the GP2 series in which Josef Král collided with Rodolfo González in an almost identical manner . Unlike Webber, Král injured himself and broke two vertebrae.
With the exception of Kobayashi, all drivers came to the pits to change tires during the safety car phase. However, the first four pilots had already passed the pit entrance. While Vettel had passed in front of the safety car, Hamilton, Alonso and Massa fell behind the safety car. However, Hamilton did not stay behind the safety car and overtook it after the safety car line, which was against the rules. The Ferrari drivers stayed behind the safety car and lost a few positions in the pits. Schumacher also lost a lot of time during the safety car phase, as he had to pit twice and thus fell back to the end of the field.
After the restart, Vettel, who almost lost the lead, pulled away again from Hamilton. A gap formed behind the two as the fourth-placed button couldn't get past Kobayashi. While the race management needed a longer time to assess the offense by Hamilton at the beginning of the safety car phase, the latter extended his lead over Kobayashi. After receiving and completing a drive-through penalty, he retained his position. Then he reduced his deficit on Vettel a little, but this had a sufficient lead over his opponent.
Button, who was behind Kobayashi, did not try to drive past the Sauber driver. Shortly before the two Bruno Senna and Timo Glock wanted to lap, Senna and Glock collided. Both continued the race, but had to pit for repairs. With ten laps remaining, the race management announced that a total of nine pilots would be examined after the race. All of them had fallen short of the minimum sector time in the first safety car phase. After the end of the race, all nine drivers received a 5-second time penalty, which did not lead to any major postponements.
Shortly before the end of the race, Hülkenberg had to give up the race. A broken tire had smashed parts of the body. He was in tenth place. With three laps to go, Kobayashi also pitted for a mandatory pit stop and then overtook Alonso and Sébastien Buemi thanks to new tires .
In the end, Vettel won the race by five seconds over Hamilton. Button also came third on the podium. In fourth place Barrichello crossed the finish line and achieved his best result for Williams to date. Further points went to Kubica, Sutil, Kobayashi, Alonso, Buemi and Rosberg.
Both Hamilton and McLaren-Mercedes retained their top positions in the world championship.
With Sebastian Vettel, another driver won the European Grand Prix for the fifth time in a row.
