The 1985 European Grand Prix took place on October 6th at the Brands Hatch Circuit and was the 14th race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

As Niki Lauda continued to be out of action due to an injury as a result of his training accident at the Belgian Grand Prix , John Watson took over his cockpit and thus made a brief Formula 1 comeback around two years after his last appearance at the 1983 South African Grand Prix .

At Tyrrell , the Italian debutant Ivan Capelli was hired as the successor to the fatally injured Stefan Bellof . Thus the team expanded its engagement to two vehicles again, while RAM Racing contested the rest of the season with only one car.

training

For the sixth time this season, Ayrton Senna secured pole position in the Lotus 97T . Brabham driver Nelson Piquet qualified for second place on the grid ahead of two Williams teammates Nigel Mansell and Keke Rosberg . The third row was formed by Philippe Streiff and Alain Prost , who led the world championship by a clear margin . Since his only remaining competitor for the title, Michele Alboreto , only qualified for 15th place on the grid, the chances for Prost were good to secure his first world championship early this weekend.

run

After just a few meters, Prost's chances of winning the World Championship title early, which had resulted from the starting line-up, were initially significantly worse, as he had to avoid Rosberg, who had started with problems, and ended up on the grass next to the track and on 14th Rank fell back, while his opponent Alboreto was ninth after a good start. Senna led the race after the first lap by Rosberg, Piquet and Mansell.

On the seventh lap, Rosberg spun while trying to overtake Senna in the Surtees curve. Piquet then collided with the Williams FW10 and retired, while Rosberg, who had only suffered a puncture, continued the race after a pit stop. He left the pit lane a few meters before the approaching Senna, who thus initially did not lap him. As a result, Rosberg intentionally blocked the Lotus driver to give his team-mate Mansell, who followed Senna in second place, an advantage. On the ninth lap, he was actually able to overtake the Brazilian.

In the twelfth lap, Alboreto was eliminated due to damage to the turbocharger , which meant that Prost, who had now fought his way back to sixth place, was fifth enough to be the world champion. Although he was pushed to seventh place by Jacques Laffite and Stefan Johansson during the following rounds , he ended up fourth and won the title.

Mansell won his first Grand Prix ahead of Senna and Rosberg. Marc Surer had previously been in second place for a few laps before retiring on lap 63 due to a turbocharger failure.
