Reports
background
The entry list for the sixth World Championship round of the year corresponded exactly to that of the Canadian Grand Prix held the previous weekend .
Although there was only one race in the USA this season and the designation of the US Grand Prix would have been clear, the race continued to be run as the US East Grand Prix , as it was held in Detroit as in the previous year . The official name was the Detroit Grand Prix .
training
Ayrton Senna took pole position for the fourth time this season. Nigel Mansell qualified for second place on the grid ahead of Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost . Keke Rosberg and Derek Warwick formed the third row.
Since it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday, most of the pilots did not complete a timed lap.
run
While Senna was converting his pole position into a lead, Rosberg overtook Prost, Alboreto and Mansell on the first lap. When Senna slowed down on lap eight due to tire problems, the Finn took over the lead, which he then defended to the finish. Mansell initially added Rosberg's lead to a Williams double lead, but turned in the 20th lap and had to let Elio de Angelis pass. Shortly afterwards he was overtaken by Stefan Johansson and retired two laps later. As a result, Martin Brundle briefly came fourth before being ousted from this position by Alboreto on lap 27.
Due to the retirement of de Angelis on lap 28, Ferrari drivers Johansson and Alboreto finished second and third behind Rosberg. From then on, nothing changed in this order until the finish, although Senna quickly caught up after a pit stop. However, he retired on lap 52 due to a mistake trying to overtake Alboreto. In the end, Stefan Bellof took fourth place ahead of Elio de Angelis and Nelson Piquet .
